E---- A Pointed Reminder: A party of adventurous lads, my- self among the number, were out for aglorious holiday. Each had his canvas bag across his shoulder, and we stole along the stone wall yonder and entered the woods beneath that group of chestnuts, Two of us acted as outposts on picket guard, and another; young Teddy Shoopegy by name, the best climber in the village, did the shaking, There were fivo busy pairs of hands beneath theso trees, I can tell you, for each one of us fully realized the necessity of making the most of his time, not knowing bow soon the warning cry from our outposts might put us all to beadlong flight, for the alarm, "Turner's coming I" was enough to lift the hair of any boy in town, chesnut trees, and then turned our attention to the hickories. was a splendid tall shagbark elose by, with branches fairly loaded with They were all ready to drop, and when tho shaking once commenced, thom by quarts and quarts. in plain sight. gaged, we noticed an ominious lull among the branches overhead. "'Sst | 'sst 1" whispored Shoopegg up above; 'I see old 'Tarner on his white horse daown the road yonder." "Coming this way?" also in a whisper, from below. "I dunno yit, but I just guess you'd better be gittin' reddy to get fer he's bitchin' his old nag 't the side 0' the road. Yis, sir, I bleove he's cammin'. Shoopegg you'd bet- ter be gittin' aout o' this," and he commenced to drop haphazard from his lofty perch. Ina moment bow- ever he seemed to change his mind, and paused, once more upon the watch, "Say, fellers," he again broke in, as we wore preparing, for a retreat,' he's gone off to'rd the cedars; he ain't cummin' this way at all. So be again ascended into the tree-top and finished his shak. ing in peace, and we our picking also. There was still another tree, with elegant largo nuts, that we had all concluded to finish up on. It would not do to leave it. They were tho largest and thinnest shell- ed nuts in town, and there were over a bushel in sight on the branch tips.. Shoopegg Was up among them in two minutes, and they were showered down in torrents as before. And whatsplendid, perfect nuts they were! We bagged them with eager bands, picked the ground all clean, and with jolly chuckles at our luck were justabout thinking of starting for home with our well-rounded sacks, when a change came oe'r the spirit of our dreams. There was a suspicions noise in the shrubbery near by, and in a moment more we heard our doom. oxclaimed a high pitched voice from panied by tho form of Deacon hardly thirty feet away. o' them nuts 2" sm---- «Oh, "ls timo I should talk to your mother, Bat luck seemed to faver us on that day- Wo "cleaned out" six big| There white nuts in their open shucks.-- the nuts came down like a shower of | hail, bounding from the rocks, ratt- ling among the dry leaves, and keep" ing up a clatter all around. I never shall forget the uncomfortable sensation that I ex- perienced as I looked into the muzzle of - that double-barrelled shot gun, and saw both the hammers raised too. And I can sée now the squint and the glaring eye that glanced along those barrels. There was a wouderfully persuasive power lurk" ing in those horizontal tubes," so I hastened to inform the Deacon that " we werd not going to run." "Wa'al," he drawled, "it. looked a leetle that way, I thort, a spell ago," and he still kept us in tho field of his weapon, till at length I ex- claimed in desperation: "Point that gun in some other way, will you?" "Wa'al, no; I'm not lor pintin' it any whar olse jist yit--not until you've sot them ar bags daown agin, Jist whar ye got em, every one on yo." The bags were speedily re- placed and he slowly lowored his gun. ¥ " Wa'al, naow," hé continued, as he came up in our midst, * this is putty bizniss, ain't it? Bin havin' a putty lively sort o' time, 1 sh'd Jjedge, from the looks o' them bags. One--two--siz on 'em; an' I vaow they must be nigh on teu two an' a half bushel in every pleggy one on 'em. Wa'al, vaow"-- with his pecu- liar drawl--* look eeab, you're a putty ondustrious lot o' thieves, I'm blest if yeu ain't." But the Deacon did all the talking for his mancevres were such as to render us speechless. "Putty lively place to come a-nuttin' ain't it?" Pause. "Putty nice moss 0' shellbarks yo got thar, I tell ye. Quite a sight o' chestnuts in yourn, ain't they 7" There was only one spoken side to this dialogue, but the panses were eloquent on both sides, and we boys opt up a deal of tall thinking as we watched the deacon alternate his glib remarks by the gradual removal of the bags to the foot of a neighbor- ing tree. This done he seated him- self on a rock beside them, " Thar," he exclaimed, removing his tall hat and wiping bis white- fringed forehead with a red bandana bandkerchief, "I'm much obleeged. I've been a-watchin' on ye gittin' these "ere nuts all the arternoon. I thort ez how yeu might like to know it." And then as though a happy thought had struck him, what should he do but deliberately spit on his hands and grasp his gun. " Look eeah"--a pause in which he cocked both barrels--"you boys wus paowerful anxyus to git away from eeah a spell ago. Naow yeu kin git ez lively ez yeu please. I hain't gov nothin' more fer yo teu dou to-day." And bang! went one of the gun barrels directly over our heads. We got, and when once out of gun range we paid the Deacon a wealth of those'rare compliments for both eye and ear that always swell the boys' vocabulary. It took Sir Isaac Newton less than threo years to thoroughly digest the principles of gravitation, while an Indiana farmer has wpent eleven years trying to find out why a cow never kicks until the pail is two thirds full. 1f you do not wish to fall in love don't commence flirting. The court- ing for fan is like boxing for fan. You put on gloves in perfect humor, with the most friendly intention of exchangingla few amicable blows; you find yourself insensibly warm with the enthusiamjof the conflict until some unlucky punch decid the matter, and the whole affair ends in a downright fight, : Father: ¢ Here you have only been married four weeks, and almost every day you come to me with complaints about your husband. You ought to be ashamed of your- self, Daughter : "Bathe fights me all the time." " Fatber: * Foolish child! Haven't your mother and me been fighting every day for thirty years; and don't we get along peaceably and quietly with each other ?" In Vienna one day recently an officer bet another that be could not empty a quart bottle of champagne at one draught. He asked for balf an hour to think the matter over; which was granted. When he re- turned he took the champagne, drank it off, and claimed the money. Ho was asked why it took him so long to accept the bet: « Well, he said; "I was not quite sure that I could do it, my dear fellow; so 1 room home first and tried the ex- periment." A North Oarolina Marriage Soon after the close of the last war Captain X was appointed a just- ice of the peace in a country place His father had been a planter in a captdin had acquired considerable experience in the busincss of manag" ing real estate, drawing up deeds, ote., during the fatber's lifetime, and then in settling the estate after his decease. Farther than this be had no legal knowledge, and, indeed, bis entire stock of 'books-learning' was small "and* poorly solected but any lack in general information was fully made up, for his use, by self assertion. Late ona afternoon as he was riding home [rom Raleigh, he met a young woman and two men who hailed him and enquired if be was Captian X. The young woman and ove of the men wished to bo married at once. The other had come as & witness. They had pro- cured the necessary license, but an irate father wos on their path, and swore that they should never be married. It was considered on all accounts safest to have the cerémony performed without delay, and try pacification afterwards. Now the captain had never witness: ed a marriage, and naturally had no very clear idea of what was usual in such cases. Heremembered hav- ing seen a book about the Louse years before with a form for marrj- age in it, but what the book was and where it was he could not remember. " Why, suid he, when he told the story afterward, 'I knew tho 'Postles Creedand Commandments, and at first I thought I'd use 'em to begin on, bit then I reckoned, on the whole they was too durned solemn.' He asked the couple to come to his house, sccretely hoping that Le could find that book; but they de- clined, for the rouson, that the matter admitted no delay. A less assured man would have been sorely perplexed, but not he. He lost no time in removing hie hat, and remarked, 'Hats off in the prosence of the court. All being uncovered, he said, ¢I'll swear you in fustoff. Hold up yer right hands. «Mo too?" asked the friend of the groom, « Of course,' said the captain, 'all witnesses must be sworn. 'Are wo married ? asked the other. ¢ Not by adurned sight yer ain't,' qdoth the captain, with emphasis; "but the fee comes in here' After some fambling it was produced and handed to the 'Court,' who examin- od it to make sure that it was all right, and then pocketed it, and con- tinued: 'Know all men by these presents that I,Captain X,of Raleigh, North Carolins, being in good health and of sound and disposiv' mind, in consideration of a dollar 'v' fifty cents in hand paid, the receipt whereof 1s hereby acknowledged, do and by these presents have declared you man snd wife during good be. havior, and until otherwise ordered by the court.' i The men put on their hts again, the young couple, after shaking their benefacter's hand went on to meet their dostiny and the irate father, while the captain rode home not far Irom Raleigh, North Carolina. | rather small Way, ani his son the |! mE Warcat Yous Bisus.--Bogus $10 bill # ion the x tsin which is effected by neatly stretching slitting away ong half of the thickness of thé bill, covering it and letting in (80 to spesk) with mucilage the words and. figtire, ten, from useless Consolidated or other bank bills.
