~ tho year wien a gleam is expectod to enter when tho everlast- rain is expected 10 bo relaxed, attention may be drawn lining which underlines 'ragged and it may be per- path of life, a time to extract sweat to bo found though in 1 quantity at the bottom of life's aup. A time to pierce the 'darke-t clouds if it wore only to & glimpse. of tho ginny spots, a! when expressions of gratitude 'congratulation are more than mon place, when: the Pan. box of human emistenco muy "be inverted and hope brought to the rfnco. Few indeed ean trace life's 'course even for a year without finda ng much cause for gratitude to the Giver of all Good, and finding also that the greater part of human woe §s attributable to mun's inhumanity to man, for unfortunately man bath both the will and the power to make bis fellow mourn. But snd must be the fate of him who at this partic- 'wlar season sees nothing for which be has canse for gratitude. In this Canada of ours where a bountiful Providerce now scatters blessings with more liberal hand thun in most other lands our expressions of grat- jtode should be deeper and wider. * Qur festive seasons may be celobrat- ed with less bluster than in most other lands but our rejoicings ure no Jess sincere ; herc we rejoice less by proxy as there are fowor amongst us for whom nothing is prepared. -- 'While there is much for which we have cause of thankfulness at all seasons of the year still the Christ. mas'and New Year's season is pecul- _ darly fitted for calling forth and _ giving expression to these feelings. Now one gets to {lie vantage ground | between the new year and the old, when he may takoa retrospect of the past, re-mark the sunken rocks and shoals which may havo given him trouble in the past so that he may avoid them in the coming year. Buch wesay isa season peculiarly ed for thankfulness for snares cs and benefits received. We very! much question if ever before a popu- lation of four millions and somewhat poor at that, dared to undertake a public work even approaching this in magnitude. The idea of four: millions of people undertaking to build a ruilway 2,677 miles longa large portion of it through a desolate wilderness and can onlf be con- structed at an enormous cost, say $26 a head for every man, womah and child in the Dominion, has scarcely a parallel in the bistory of :public works. The work is a great one indecd and it says more for tho plack thar the wisdom of 'a hapdiul of people io undertake so formidable task, but death bofore dishonor, baving undertaken the work there must be no surrender, we must face it like men and pat it through. In this as in most undertakings, where there's a will there's a way. Bat like every other public Undertaking in this Canada of ours, political eapi- tul is sought to bo made out of it not only to the annoyance but to the absolute injury of the couptry. The introduction of the National Policy was made a political bone of conten-- tion, every possible obstacle was und is even now, thrown in the way of its successful working; means the most unfair and dishonest where adopted to bring the N. P. into disrepute, and so far was the opposition carried that attempts were even made to bring the Dominion and mother country into antagonism regarding the hated N, P. But the N.P. went on all the same and prospered, and the country prospered and is con- tinuing to prosper under it antil the advantages have become so obvious that the loudest mouthed opposi- tionists are completely silenced ; and had it not been for this windfall, the Syndicate Contract, her Majesty's loyal Opposition would have been speechless, they wonld not. have had asingle peg to hang a growl on.-- 1 ate when fortunately for them the Syndicate Contract was thrown amongst them, This was seized with avidity the anti-N. P's were at once called off and set on the track of the C.P. RR, and it would appear that the mode of warfare to be addpted isto be similar tq, that adopted against the .N. PP, misrepresentation and falsealarm. This C. P. R.--Canada Pacific Ruilway--is no new matter, it has been on the tapis for many years, it bas been tackled by three successive Governments, the first foundered on it and wont 'to pinees the second could not grapple with it, the third has brought it into shape, i The firet of which Sir John A was the head proposed to let the work by contract giving €30,000,000 in eash and 50,000,000 acres of land to whichever company would com- plote the work, binding the company to have the work completed within ten years. This set the Opposition camp on end and ufter a serivs of acts of the most unscrupulous character, buying over traitors, etealing letters and similar fraudulent acts succeeded in bringing a charge against the gov- ernment which swept them from power horse foot, and artillery. The Opposition now went into power with a rush and it became their duty to handle the C.P.R. The Mucker.zie Government agreed with the late Government on the advisa- bility of letting this great work by tender and they considered and the Parlinment consented, that $48, 947, in cash and 55,940,000 acres of land would be. a fair amount to roud, and they went on the strength heen able to run the Government or rather the country, they would doubtless -have Rone. ohiggling]' ckenzie Government ning the taxation and hopeleseiy Falling : 3. yous; ind had brought" best inter [Fonntsy such opposition becomes a} jtountry 19 reject the present bar- oorned wil do well fo glve him well. vernmont in tho vain hope | {that if thoy kick up a row some- thing may turn up to their political 'advantage. It is both the duty and interest of all to thoroughly invest- igate, publicly discuss and sharply criticise the actions of our rulers whoever they may be, without the slightest regard to names or party, but when party triumph or self ag- grandizement is placed before costly toy, degrading to politics, and detrimental to tho best interests of the country. Divested of all pol itieal intrigue and plots to capture the treasury benches the gnestion for the people is, is the present bar. gain batter than any previons vne? If the present bargain is not all we could wish, could we gota better? Would it bs to the advaniage of the gain and risk another ten: years | gropping in the dark and a regular pitched battle over every contract that islet. Such was the case with every contract attenipteéd to bo let by Sir John's Government previous to its fall in 1873 it was made the oc- casion for a pitched battle between the Govornment and Opposition [forces, and in fuct it was in one of these battles that Sir John's forces were defeated. Again when Mackenzie and his party came into power their reign was only a series of battles, every new contract let was the signal for another battle and thus much time and money have been wasted and would continue to be wasted so long as the work remained in the hands of the Government no matter which party held the reins of power. It ought to be n relief to every one to find it pass into private hands, EEE Prepared for the Holdiays.
