Then came fhe 'yards, one of the most danger- ous of all jobs when a heavy sea is running. any a ship has lost a whole watch over the side while the work on the braces. Continuing, Mr. Lubbock says: "I was about fifth on the rope with old Wilson singing out on one side of me and Higgins on the other. We had hardly taken two pulls at the brace when a huge sea broke aboard right over our heads, and both watches were awept ofl their fect in every direction. ~Wilson, Higgins and I received the full force of it. For one tiny mom- ent of time I saw the great hissing mass as jt reared its foaming top higher and higher above us, and then crash! it toppled its whole weight us. "Knocked down and overwhelmed the monster, I hung to the brace No all my strength. Under water, hiels gbove my head, I saw the ing ison 'and Higgins. "*Over and over the sea rolled me, and hurled me With terrible force against the main-hatch, and three times my poor right knee came against the ring-bolt "I hung to the brace until the water tore it from my grasp, and away I went, first my head up, then my feet, a plaything to the whim of the water *It washed me round the hatch, bumped me against the fife-rail, and rolled me into the scuppers 1 got entangled and disentangled with oth- er human bundles, and never for =a second could 1 get my head above water. "At last the water began to run off, and I found myself sitting up with my head out. I lay to the star- board of the main-hatch. Close to me in the scuppers lay three men in a tangled mass. Mixed up in the fife- ois were two more. Anothér lay gasping on his back under the break of the poop. *"Above the gale I heard the mate's woice, 'Main-brace, therel Up you it. "I picked myself up, dazed and Balf-drowned. The captain, who was on the poop, seeing the whole of his ship's crew washing about the decks, dashed down to the deck up to his waist in water, went to the head of the braes, and cheering us on and hauling to his ewn singing out, soon got us going again. "No one was lost Such is Pro vidence! We ought te have been killed; we ought to have been wash- od overboard; but at sea Providence bas constantly to intervene, or mo pailor would live long.' ------------------ LADY COLEBI EBROOKE. Whore She Get tha Orest That Was "Se Full of Significance. Here's a good etory told about Lady Colebrooke, that prominent Englishwoman who visited this country last winter. Lady Cole- brooke is of the well known Paget family. Lord Colebrooke's ancestors are equally aristocratic, and the Cole in crest is a rampant lion, three doves over the head and a wolf éouchant above all. It is an elabor- ate affair When Lady Colebrooke tras dining out with one of the opul- ent hostesses of Long Island she gladced casually at the dinner vice, every bit of which was embossed with a crest. She was ac customed to heraldic china and did mot at once inspect the design min- utely. Later in the evening, to her great surprise, she became aware that the Colebrooke crest was upon all of her hostesses' dinner service Where did you get this crest?" she exclaim- ed impulsively The hostess replied unconcernedly "Isn't it a pretty one? 1 picked it out when we fur- nished this house. It was the pretti- est I could find, and those dear little doves, I think, are so full of signifie- ance.'"' Lady Colebrooke murmured sadly, "So full of significance." The Abbreviation ef Zeelegiocal. The tendency among English people to clip long words into short ones or even into monosyllables is notori- ous. Thus "'cabriolet" has become cab, "omnibus" bus and so on. But the change of "zoological" into zoo, is, to any one who kmows the origin of the word, the most exasperating of all, and yet we now meet with zoo in well written journals. There is another variation, which comes simply from bad pronuncia- tion, as when a cockney holiday maker tells you he has beem to the "'slogical."" If 'zoological' is to un- dergo a shortening like that which has befallen "omnibus" and '"'cabri- olet" let it at least become zo. This would be correct as far as it went and would not be so excruciating as the , detestable zoo. -- Notes and Queries. 2 Twe Kinds of Dancers. The Rev. Reginald Campbell of the London City temple during his visit to America said a number of amusing things. One of them con- cerned dancing. All A Walled Tews in Britais. In the old days when might was right the city that was walled about was common enough, but there are very few towns im Britain which preserve their walls at the present day. Of those few, undoubtedly the most unique is Berwick-upon-Tweed, the old Border town, which has oc~ cupled many a page of the past his- and tory of the United Kingdom which to this very day enjoys the distinction of special mention as a place apart from the United King- dom in every Royal proclamation {g= sued. Here ths old battlements built in the time of Queen FKlizabeth re main intact, with all but one of the amcient gateways, and even in some cases the very ponderous gates themselves on their old rusty hinges Jn reality there are too walls, the outside and older one, of which now only some fragments remain stand- ing, dating back to the far-off times of Bdward the First, who in tha great hall of Berwick Castle--only a small part of which now remains-- decreed that Baliol should be Xing of Scotland, a decree which, as every schoolboy knows, was soon set at de- flamca hv the Bruce and his hardy | "MONEY TO LOAN. It takes scven million tons of air a day to carry away the Londom smoke, compared with one million tons of water to carry away the sew- | age. This poisoned has already proved fatal to many of the | fine old trees for which the neigh borhood of London, was once famous, and the destruction of the Kew ar- | boretum "is only a question of time." Moreover, a bad fog may | cost $25,000 a day for lighting | alone, and Mr. J. C. Hawkshaw, an authority on the subject, thinks that $25,000,000 a year is not an exces- sive estimate for the total expense of smoke pollution to London. Your Liver Is it acting well? Bels. regular?
