THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES. een. Text of the Lesson Neh. Iv, 6-18 Memory Verses, 16, 17--Gelden Text, 1 Cor, xvi, 13--Commentary Prepared by Res D. M. Stearns. | Our ledson topic today is the bulld- ing of a great wall by such unlikely | instruments that their enemies had fo |confess that the work was wrought (of God (vi, 16). work, they watched and prayed while they wrought, and they did the work 'nearest to them. As to their having & mind to work (verse 6), we cannot | but think of the willing men and wo- | men and the willing offerings of Ex. | xxxv, 21-20, and of David's preparing with all his might for the house of Mis God because he had set his affec- | fion upon it (I Chron. xxix, 2, 8); of | Hezekiah also, who wrought that which was good and right and truth ,before the Lord his God and did it | |with all his heart and prospered (II , Chron. xxxi, 20, 21). vee as we would like to nor as some others do, but "if there be first a will- that a man hath and not according to that be hath not" And we are only | expected to minister as of the ability which God giveth (1I Cor. vill, 12; I | jr iv, 11). The time will come when | in an unprecedented way His people | shall be willing in the day of His | power (Ps. cx, 8). As to watching and praying see Mark xiii, 33-37; xiv, 88. Observe in chapter iil, 5, 8, 12, 17, | 22, the kind of people who builded-- | goldsmiths, apothecaries, merchants, { priests, Levites, rulers' daughters and | rulers--but note that certain nobles | put not their necks to the work of the | Lerd. In verses 28, 28, 20, we read | that some repaired "over against his | house" or "by his house," suggesting | { { ing mind it is accepted according to | | | | i that we should be ready to do the "| ¢hing that is at hand to be done, "ready to do whatever our Lord the King shall appoint" (II Bam. xv, 15). Even though some may refuse, the 3 work shall be finished, for "He shall { pot fail nor be discouraged" (Isa. xiii, |e It is worthy of note that the work began and ended at the sheep gate | (4, 1, 82), which suggests to me that there can be no work for God until re- deemed by the blood of the Lamb, and the completed church will sing, "Thou hast redeemed us 'to God by thy blood." Nehemiah found many ene- mies sid not only ridiculed the work and he workers, but conspired against them to himder it (iv, 33,1} 8 11). Bo it has been since Cain kill- | ed Abel and will be until the great last gatbering of the enemy and his hosts against the Lamb and His re- deemed ones just before the millen- sium and a very last and final con- _ flict at the end of the thousand years (Rev. xvii, 14; xix, 19, 20; xx, 7-10). Bv- | . ery day the conflict is on, but we may | be overcomers and quench all the fiery | darts, for the armor and the weapon are all sufficient (1 Pet. v, 8, 9; Eph« vi, 10-18; Rev. xii, 11). It is bad enough to have enemies without, but when these are complainers and dis- couraged people within the camp it gees a bit worse. When those who | line. Even if he consented to purchase them, and to refain me in his em- ploy, it ie not likely that he would trust a man who had already proved a traitor to one master. It would pot be long before my name became known throughout the | 08 can theatrical profession as one who had | I given away secrets, and 1 should soon be out vf work without a character | « a matter of fact, illusfonists take | ty good care that their secrets do When a well-known conjurer is performing, he w 1 allow no one on the stage except his own men, the wings and back part of the | stage being curtained off so that the people in the wings are utterly in the oe as to how the various tricks are accomp. ed. In spite of thess precantions secrets do occazionally become known | through the working of a trick; but, | as a rule, illusionists take ample pre- cautions. 1 am very well paid for my services, | and honestly earn my money, for 1 am an expert conjurer myself, and | play nearly as important a part in gome {llusioris as my employer. Be- sides my work on the stage, T am re- sponsible for the mechanical appara- tus we employ, and have to get each trick into perfect working order before | the show commences. This takes me between two and three hours every day; a big magician em- ploys hundreds of ¢ mplicated con- trivances to assist him in his lu- | sions. This makes it difficult for rival | magicians to copy tr , although, | of course, illusionists borrow" from one another whenever they get an | opportunity to do so. Tricka of some | mayicians may seem identical to the public, but each illusionist has his own method of producing the effect obtained, so that the performer with the neatest methods score best. We rehearse our tricks very careful- ly, going over a new {llusion again and sgsin, until we have discovere everything that can possibly cause the trick to tail. We also allow for any little hitches that may occur, BO that should something go wrong with our illusion when it is being shown we can perform it in a different man- ner, without the audience being any of the wiser. Audiences are not at all quick to notice things; certainly not 80 quick ag one would imagine 1 have known dozens of slips to pass unnoticed by a large audience which would have gtven many illu- sionss away. had the spectators been more on alert. er The Ciamese Oath. If any form of oath is calculated to impress one, that which is prescribed fo the state officials of Siam is likely to do so. Bach official has to say: "May the blood flow from my veins, may crocodiles devour ime, may 1 be | condemned to carry water to the flames of hell in vessels without bot- toms, After death may I enter the body of a slave. May 1 suffer the harshest treatments during all time in years as numerous as the sands of all | the seas. May I be reborn deaf, dumb ad blind, and afflicted with dire mala- dies. May I also be thrown into Na- rok (the lower regions) and tortured by Prea Yam if I brea this oath." en On the Shelf. Aunt--Have you still that doll 1 gave Dorie? W. Furlong in World's Work. He Tried the Impossible. There has been no lack of cases of heroism in the explosion which de- stroyed the French battleship Liberte in Toulon harbor, and one 2 them at least deserves to be placed on record. It was after the first explosion, which filled the holds with polsonous gases. The eleotric wires were broken and all was in complete darkness below. Chie! Engineer Lestin, who bad vainly tried to flood the ammunition magazines, tumbled half dazed on deck and re- ported to Lieut. Garnier that he had 4 | done his best, but she pumps were 0 not working and it was im; flood the holds. "Try the impossible," was the re. Py, ""The magazines must be flood: e Lestin touched his cap and said, "I will try again, but you will never see me back alive." With a firm step he went down he- |b low again, and shortly elterward the final catastrophe happened. Liquid Fuel Oils, It has been shown that ofl with a flash point ol 239 degrees Fahrenheit will not ignite Uf fired (nto with a shell, and if dynamite iu ex loded in a reservoir of this oil it only throws up jets of oil which do not ignite The only dangerous liquid fuel oils are those which have not parted with their volatile, inflammable gases, such ne absolutely crude oils. ih all ordinary comIner fuel oils thess portions are removed, ard the oil is safe and contains no power of spontaneous combustion. Oil with a fire test of 180 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit is as safe as coal, and Jt will not ignite when stirred with a red hot poker nor when hot coals are thrown in it. --_---- Early Marriage In China.
