"turned out" a lawyer, a doctor and a preacher from his family of nine, and had matarial left for a few clerks and salesmen, but did he not pursue a much wiser course ? Is not his example worthy of imitation by thousands of indulgent papas who consider their sons 100 goad for the workshop, grist mill and the foundry ? ¢ Why, they are so fashionable--I \hink our room looks nearly naked without one.' «I think it looks just right." ¢ I think it leoks very naked---we want a piano shockingly," protested Esther emphat- ically. The husband rocked violently." ¢ Your lamp smokes, my dear,' said he, after a long pause. ¢« When are you going to get a camphene lamp? I have told you a dozen times how much we needed one,' said 'Esther, pettishly. 24 ¢ These are very pretty lamps--I never can see by a camphene lamp,' said her husband. ¢ These lamps are the prettiest ofthe kind I ever saw.' ¢« But, George, [ don't think our room is complete without a camphene lamp,' said Esther sharply. ¢ They are so fashionable. Why, the Morgans and Millers, and, many others I might mention, all have them. I am sure we ought to." « We ought to if we take pattern by other people's expenses, and I don't seo any reason in thaw' The husband moved easily in his chair, ¢« We want to live as well as others,' said Esther. «We want to live within our means, Esther,' exclaimed George. ¢ I am sare we can afford 1t an well as the Morgaus, Millers and Thorns ; we do not wish 10 appear mean.' George's cheeks crimsoned. ¢Mean! [ am not mean,' he cried, angrily. '* Then we do not wish to appear so,' said the wife. ¢ To complete this room and make it look like other penple's we want a piano and a camphene lamp.' + We want, we want said the husband. « There is no satisfying woman's want', do what you may,' and he abruptly left the room. How many husbands are in a similar di- lemma? How many houses and husbands are r-ndered uncomfortable by the ccnstant dissatisfaction of a wife with present com- forts and present provisions? How many bright prospects for business have ended in bankruptcy and ruin, in order to sausfy this secret hankering alter fashionable neces- suries ? Could the real cause of many failures be known, it would be found to result from useless expenditure at home expenses to answerthe demands of fashion, and ¢ what will people thnk ?' ¢ My wife has made my fortune," enid a gentivman of great possession, by her thrift and prudance, and cheerfulness when [ was just beginning.' « And mine has lost mine,' answered his 2| companion, ¢by useless extravagance and repining, when | was doing well.' What a world does this open to the in- fluence which a wife possesses over the prospenty of her family. Let the wite know her influence, and (ry to use it wise- ly and well. ) Be satisfied to commence on a small «cale. Itis ton common for young house- keepers to begin where their mothers end- el. Buy all that 1s necessary to work skilfally with ; adorn your house with all that will render it comfortable. Do not look at richer homes and covet their costly farniture. If secret dissatisfaction is ready to spring up, go a step further, and visit the cheerless apartment, insufficien: clothing, and the absence of all the comforts and re~ finements of social life, and then return to your own with a foyfal spirit. You will then be able to meet your husband with a rateful heart, and be realy lo appreciate = toil and self-denial which he has ep- dured in the business world to surround you with the delights of home ; and yon will be ready 10 co-operate cheerfully with him in #0 arranging your expenses, that his mind will not constantly be harrassed with fears lest his family expenditure way encroach upon business payments. Be independent. A young house keeper never needed greater wnoral courage than she does now in_ order 10 resist the arrogance of fashion. Do not let the A's and B's decide what you are to your purse. NOTICE OF MOTIONS. Mr. Gordon gaye notice that on to-mor« row he will move for leave to introduce a By-Law to appoint a County Engineer. The Warden stated that there was a mat- ter connected with the Auctioneers' Licence which he wished the Council to take action upon. He said that during ther late session of this Council and while the Auctioneers' License By-Law was under consideration. Certain parties had apphed for, and taken out licence, and consequent ly under the conditions of the old By-Law. He (the® Warden) understood that Mr. L. Fairbanks' was a case in point, and several others he believed would be mentioned * by members of Council. Thera was one how- ever, "Mr. Monro, who had been acting without license and had in consequence been fined, but the payment of the fine had been deferred in order to ascertain the mind of the Council in the matter ; he however was not in possession of allthe facts in the caso but the Treasurer was present, and would explain the matter to the Council. The Treasurer stated that Mr. Muoro had been negligent in the matter--it is true that he (Mr. Munro) had intimated to him (the Treasurer) in a passing manner that he wished to "take oat a license, but time.-- Carried. » he had failed to do so. Mr. Fairbanks suggested that the matter e referred to the finance committee. Mr. Gillespie would like to know if thers hd been any licenses taken out under the ew By.Law. The Treasurer replied that there were six who had taken out license nder the new By-Law, viz: Messrs. Matthews, Bishop, Digby, Card, Stevenson, nd McGill. Mr. Brethour thinks that the By-Law is somewhat lame in making no provisions for dealing with paities who violate its condi- ons. . Mr. McCreight seconded by Mr. Wixon, moved for leave to introduce a By-Law to Clerk of the United Townships, and also" Assessment Roll and any other document bearing on the subject--said committee to report by By-law appointing the first pol- ling place, Returning officer, &e., in or- der to eflect the objects contemplated by said petition.-- Carried. Here the Warden informed the Council that he had had a communication from the Local Superintendent of Education for Pickering, that said superintendent in consequence of his removal from Pickering, had resigned his office, and it would consequently devolve upon the Council to appoint some one to fill said office. There being no further business prepared to bring before the Council--on motion of Mr. Wright the Council adjourned till to- morrow morning at 10 o'clock. So the Council adiourned. THIRD DAY. The Warden took the chair shortly after 10 o'clock--Members all present except Mr. Smith, Scott. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. PETITIONS. : "1st.
