The report sets forth that the extension of the Port Hope and Peterboro Railway to Lakefield, will likely be contiased to Mud . Lake, in which event, thav read will carry off a large portion of the wade of Lind- say 1m the shape of Lnwber and other freight. The ressht of the Lindsny and BeaverloMextension is regarded by the committee as detrimental to the prospects of Lindsay, inasmuch as markets will be opened up along the line 10 the north where which would otherwise have bean tranes ct- od w Lindsay. The eommittes cone' idnry that the Port Whitby and Port Perry Rail- way will not injure the trade of Lindsay in the slightest degree. The com miitee be- lieves that the extension of the, Toronto and Nipissing Railway to Eldor, wi) have the effect of arsstingto darken the futare pros- pects of Lindeay--0 that with railroads from Port Hope to Mud Lake, from Port Hope to Beavertoww, and from Toronto to Edom. the: committee considers that the fotuse: prospects of Lindsay would not be over brght. The committee next referred to the proposed Lindsay branch of the To- ronto aod Nipissing road, and gave a state- maut of the cost of a trip to Toronto, first by way of the Port Hope and Lindsay, and then by way of the Toronto and Nipissing. Fare from Lindsay to Toronto and back by way of PortHope is. $7.70 Time occupied (3 days at $1 per A8Y) ams cn ncn arvivannna Board for the 3 days at $1.50 per day 3.00 Making im W................ $15.20 for each trip 10 Toronto, by way of Poit Hope. Of course it won't be quite so agreeable not to have jobs to give to one's friends, but it is undoubtedly more economienl and could not fail to suit the general purposes of the corpora- tion infinitely better. By the system which the Council introduced at its past sittifig, of giving to those places which require assistance, irrespective of the lo cality in which they may be situated, the most pressing demands will always be met first without being under the necessity of giving 810 or $15 to three or four different localities where it is not required, in order to carry a grant of $20 to some locality where twice that amount is absolutely necess- ary. We say that the system adopted by the late session of Council will, if carried out, effectually cure this vicious habit, and allow the money to be appropriated where it is most needed. Ninety-nine outofevery hundred of ratepayers of the municipality will hail this change with the utmost satisfaction, and will never be fonnd grumbling over the amounts expended on the roads so long as they know that it is judiciously expended, of which the system just adopted wil! be an abundant guarantee. There is no other way in which the funds of the corpora. tion can be employed to more profit or yield a better return than when they are judiciously expended on the roads in the township. -- I --eeas. TE town backed by a few from Port Perry had banded together to'foret a scheme opon the townships and make them pay for 1t--a scheme which would be very much to the tridividpel personal advantage of the schem- érs while it cannot fail to prove detrimental | to the intersts of a large majority of the ect injuriously many of our own people as well ag ya Mariposa. > Had these parties had the least regard for the county of which they so much boast, had the welbeing of Soutn Oatario or Reach : the slightest eoncern to them § had they the most remote desite to benefit that township, in place of ranning the line along the eastern limit they would have taken it west of Manchester. But this would not have suited the selfish purposes of ihe par- ties concerned ; as one of the main ntjects of the undertaking was to kill off your ewn villige and Manchester, the latter of which tg all appearance will at no distant day absorb the lion's share of the trade of North Ontario. Though not a man of ox at- tempted to oppose the Scugog and Whitby read, there were not ten men in the fown- ship who did not see through the plot, and admrre the profuse generosity ot Reach and Whitby while, the company was squeezing $95,000 out of them for running a road from Port Perry to Crafty Chester's whait. The people of the town of Whitby giving $50,- 000 for Chester's special benefit, and 1o their own nranifest disadvantage ; and the rate- payers of your own township giving $40,000 to benefit one corner, and injure all the rest of that township, Should these parties suc- ceed in their designs, which 10 me svems rather doubtful, it would prove a great an- noyauee to a large portion of Brock as well as to. many in Mariposa, who instead of slipping easily along the centre road to Manchester as we now (lo wouid then have, to our great disadvantage, to seek ovr way to Port Perry, Knowingall this we Mull al- lowed those concerned to manages theirown affairs. No man from Brock sought to fol= low the inissionaties a« they passed around Reach and Whitby swelling the heads of the people with big stories of the amuzing- ly great things which the lumber mansfac- turers of the back lakes had offered to da, far the road. It was time and agam potlely assertyd by the missionaries, if they were reported correctly, that Messrs. Boyd and coma others had offered in the first place to take $50,000 m stock, and as mach moro if that vould not suffice, besides guaranteeing an annual lumber traffic of forty milion feet af lumber. 1and many more of my fellow lownsmen understood the whole thing 10 be a grand hoax attempted 10 be palmed off on the people of South Outario, for a sinister motive ; and the sequal has proved that we were right in designating the $50,- 000 stack blow a complete hoax. The townships of North Ontario have, I should judge, been nearly long en- ough under the whip of a few wire puilers whose only ambien is to fill their own coffers at the expense of the rest of the county ; and the day may come--and no one knows how soon, when this thing be- eoming intolerable,a remedy may be sought for it in a quarter where it is hile expected and a permanent cure obtained, none to the profit ot these hangerson. Sir,-- The more than necessary share of attention paid to Brock and her private con- cerns by the hberal minded gentry of the town of Whitby, and a lew of the disinter- estedly generous people of your own town- ship ought not to be allowed to pass un- noticed, lest these unselfish individoals may ad the «in of ingratitude to the already 100 extensive catalogue of vices which they have tramped vp against us unfortunate Brockites. | am free to admit that this town- ship, like all other townships, has its faults and failings ; but were we as narrow mind- ed, as unscrupulously selfish, as covetously body steer anr course 10 the unsettled regions of the far North-West, and spend the re- mainder of our days with our superiors, the wanderingludiana, I am not ignorant of the sins which the people of Brock have com- mitted againet a few of the great minded men of Whitby town, and we are prepared 10 make open ronfersion.
