ps and Marketing. An excellent article on the above subject appear So 4 revsut; number 0 Gentleman, the upshot A ms to show that vp gain by holding on to produce hi eb prices: and that it is the part of wisdom to sell when there isa fair market, Even if a little more is obtained by holding produce, there is loss by shrinkage, rats, interest, &c., beside constant risk in connection with perishable property. The tes- _timony of a farmer of considerable ex is to this effect: --* When I was young and in debt, I wos com- polled to sell my grain and wool without délay to meet my paymenfs; bot since I have got out of debt, I often keep them for months, in order 20 receive higher prices. 1 find in the average of years, that I did bet- ter then than now." No small amout of anxiety is often experienced, and many a sleeplcss night passed, under the feverish de- sire to know just when to sell, so as 1o realize the most by so doing." Our cotemporary reasons that it is every way t to market produce when . there is a fair demand, at a reasona- ble price. We quote the closing para: gaph of the article under considera tions "Farmers are hard to satisfy. Many years ago wheat ran up for a + short time to $2. A purchaser wish- ing to obtain some very fine seed wheat, offered the farmer $2.25-- which, exciting his suspicions and increasing his rapacity, he refused-- to sell next year at half price. It seems that the higher rates advance, the more dissatisfied many become. We can well remember when the standard price for wheat in Western New York was three shillings (373c) per bushel --some was actually sold for one shilling. Now that the price is two dollars and a half or more, we find owners as much dissatisfied as ever. This dissatisfaction induces them to hold out against their own interest, as already shown. We should be glad if some of our readers would keep a record for the next ten years, embracing the following points. On one side place the price of grain on the first of October ; on the other the price on the first of May, deduct- ing from the latter, the waste by keeping, rats, cost of storage, and the interest on the whole--then observe on which side the greatest amount of profit 18 found. We have no doubt the experiment would prove a useful one, and show the propriety of selling when there is a fair demand in mar- ket.'-- Canada Farmer. ----e The Stomach and the Mind. Much of our conduct depends, no doubt, upon the character of the food wo eat. Perhapu, indeed, the mature of our meals governs the na- ture of our impulses more than we are inclined to admit, because none of us relish well the abandonment of onr idea of free agency, Bonaparte used to attribute the loss of one of his battles to a poor dinner, which, at the time, disturbed his digestion how many of our misjudgments-- how many of our deliberate errors-- how many of our unkindnesses, or «cruelties. or acts of thoughtlessness, and recklessness, may be actually owing to a cause of the same charac- ter? We eat something that de- ranges the condition of our system. "Through the stomachic nerve that derangement affects the brain. Mo- roseness succeeds to amiability ; and ander its influence we do that which would shock our sensibilities at any other moment. Or perhaps a gas- #ric irregnlarity is the common result of an over-indulgence in wholésome food, ora moderate' indulgence in unsuitable food. The liver is affiict- ed. In this affliction the brain sym- pathizes. The temper is soured ; the winderstanding is narrowed ; preju- dices are strengthened, generous im- pulses are subdued ; selfishness, ori- .ginated by physical disturbances which perpetually distract the mind's attention, becomes a chronic mental disorder ; the feeling of a charity dies out; we live for ourselves alone ; we have no care for others. And all this change of nature is the consequence of an iojudicious diet. An Ingenious Cypher. The Abyssinian correspondent of the Herald writes :-- THE MAGDALA CYPHER, by which the captives were enabled to communicate with each other, has fallen into your correspondents hands alone. By this cypher Theodorus's spies were confounded. The alpha- bet was divided into groups of letters thus: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ¥ PF §. 0% 0% 38 EVERYBODY! SHOULD KNOW !
