Winnipeg, May 21, 1917 Mr S Farmer, Port Perry, Pte Russell McGill, of the 123rd Battalion, Royal Grenadiers, died of wounds, May 9th, in a military clear- ing depot in France. Mother and father are residing in Calgary at present, while I am still with the Union Bank, Winnipeg, Eva M. McGill. Rev Edward F Goff, died after an operation for stomach trouble, Rev Mr Goff was the Methodist minister stationed at Port Perry in 1880. He became president of Pomona College, Claremont, Cal, and died there on May 12, 1917. f Empire Day at the Public School As is the custom--at the Public School there were suitable exercises conducted on the afternoon before Empire Day. A program was given including choruses, the Recessional reading by Helen Mellow, and an address by Rev W P Rogers. It is well to keep in mind the glories of the Empire and the beauty of char- acter possessed by the late Qneen Victoria, who still lives in the mem- aries of most of the older people and was a living example of kindly wo- manliness. . If only we could get the hundred and one criticisms about road making---many of them very use- ful---put on paper there would be a helpful basis to work upon." No one man has all the good ideas on road making, and the man who 1s best able to build roads is the man who most readily re- cognizes the value of other peoples ideas, and of the many difficulties that attend this job that everybody thinks he can do.
