FARM FOR SALE | other robin inside, "We took in Phone 152 of this particular house. The arrival of a pair of martins was always a cause of much worry and annoyance to 'the sparrow. Shut out of one house and defeated in his dash de- signs upon another he was particular- ly anxious to have and to hold his snug quarters in the top story. One day a martin stood id the door- way of one of the apartments and ex- citedly called" his 0 'Was cir- cling all -arofind and about, to come and inspect the apartment with which he seemed to be much taken up. He called and coaxed and pleaded, some- times it seemed he even threatened but it was all of no avail. - She would not even look at the: place, but pro- vokingly continued circling about un- til he consented to go where her in- clinations led her, We are hoping to have better luck With the martins this season. A As before stated we put up one house for the robins, but as far as getting tenants was concerned we fared no better than we did with the martins, Evidently they did not like the style of house we put ups We made the mistake of closing it on three sides. "Apparently the robin is quite satisfied with a house that has]. no walls, as long as it has a roof, or is sheltered in some way. However the robins did mot forsake us alto- gether as the martins did. - One pair occupied an old nest on the 'front verandah. At first Mrs, Robin was a little suspicious when she saw us walking about on the lawn and would fly away when we came too near. Later she became more confident and watched us with curiosity rather than alarm as we worked at the flowerbed close by. Her confidence increased until nothing disturbed her except the uncivilized rattle of the lawn mower. One day we looked oat of the kit- chen window and saw a robin sitting on the ledge of the window of the barn loft. His actions aroused our interest and curiosity. = He would peck at the glass, fly off to the apple tree near by, thén fly back again, beat the window with his wings, fly all around it and peck again until we wondered what form of madness had taken "possession of him. We sup- posed that he was anxious to get in- side to build his nest there. He was} '80 persistent and apparently so de 'termined that we decided to go and open the window and let him have his desire. What was our surprise on going upstairs to the loft to find an- situation at a glance. "The robin in- side was his mate.
