OUR FEATHERED FOLK Speaking of robins, we are remind- ed of an incident that happened about four years ago in a certain village where we lived at that time. One morning we went across the street to speak to a neighbor who lived oppo- site. It was wet and a little chilly. In front of his house was a large maple and on a branch of this tree not more than ten feet above the side- walk was a robin's nest. While we were talking our attention was at- tracted to the tree. On looking up we saw Mrs, Robin getting her break- fast in bed. The nest was poorly sheltered and the rain was dripping ~ F. W. McINTYRE down upon her. She looked wet and ' miserable, but she did not dare to leave the nest and expose the eggs | under such conditions. Mr. Robin | with perfect understanding of the situation was feeding his mate as she sat on the nest. - On Sunday during the children's part of the service I told the boys and girls about this particular nest and remarked that I did not hestitate to tell them about it as I felt sure they would disturb it. One day a little later a lady called over the phone to say that her little boy had come home much excited, and concerned about the little robins. He said some boys had climbed up and frightened the I | little birds and they had fallen down out of the nest. He was anxious for his mother to call me about it. I went over and found the birds out of the nest as he had saidg Whether the boys frightened them out or not did not much matter at their age. If Sale of Stamped : Luncheon Sets 59c. We were pleased howevér to see that some of the seeds we scattered had fallen into good ground. The following Indian legend con- cerning the robin is found in' Peter Jone's "History of the Ojibways." "They say the robin was once an Indian maiden who fasted for a long | time and just before she was turned ! into a bird she painted her breast, and as she flew away she laughed for joy, | saying she would ever hereafter re- turn to her friends early in the Spring, and bring them the news of what was to happen during the year: if peace and plenty, then she would come to them laughing, making the following noise 'Che-che-che!' that is Ha-ha-ha: but if war or trouble then she would say 'Url-rwoh-che-ga' or I Prophesy evil tidings." --F.
