Mr. Nich- olson, of Cannington, gave an inter- esting illustrated lecture on Canadian Birds at the United Church. Mr, Nicholson emphasized the value. of birds and pointed out that they are the saviors of mankind in the endless war with insects. We should over- look their small faults, he said, and remember the great work they do. He denounced the common house cat as one of the birds' greatest enemies and suggested that its ravages be cur- tailed as much as possible, The slides which accompanied the lecture showed, in their natural color, the principal Canadian birds, The speaker gave a brief sketch of the life history and habits of the bird as each slide was shown. After the lecture Mr. Nicholson in- vited inquires on the subject of birds and answered several questions for members of the audience. The lecture, which was sponcered by the Young People's Society, was well attended. sme (mm---- IN-MEMORIAM Town--In loving memory of my dear husband, Robt. Urn SEAGRAVE NOSES OUT MAN- CHESTER 1-0 IN BUSH LEAGUE. GREENBANK LOSES TO HONEY- DALE IN OVERTIME The best and closest hockey of the rural league season was exhibited at the Arena last Tuesday night. Both games were tied most of the time and one had to go into. overtime to reach a decision. The ice was hard as flint and both contests were very fast. Greenbank surprised Honeydale by putting up a very courageous stand in the first game. The boys from the top of the hill worked like Trojans. Shepherd turned in a fine performance for Greenbank and was practically un- beatable in goal. The score at the end of the third perfod was 2-2; In the overtime, however, although Greenbank played heroically, Honey- dale could not be denied. In the last five minutes they scored twice. This is the best showing the "Bankers" have made yet. If they keep on they should win. The second game was scarcely less exciting. Manchester and Seagrave provided the interest for this tussle. For two periods the Manchester boys held the groupleaders to a 0-0 tie and for the best part of the third period there was no score. Then, just as everybody was anticipating another Thursday February 14 Greenbank vs. Sea; ve Janes given by the Upper Canada Col-|{. RURAL HOCKEY Manchester vs. oneydale GAME CALLED AT 8.00 p.m. A... WELSH MINERS: RELIEF FUND approached, re the taking up of a special offering in the Sunday School for the above fund. However, 1 feel that it would be much better if the whole community would unite together and make "a community offo g" to this very ur- gent and needy fund. And I take the liberty of suggesting that the Clergy of the town and the business men get together, Py bring into im- mediate action a committee for this purpose, which I believe would much better than doing the thing de- nominationally in a small community. The subscription should be available to everyone who can donate for a nickel upwards. As a community may we realize that "Men the wide world o'er are brothers." : Yours truly, R. B.
