On Monday evening the members of the A.Y.P.A. of St. Paul's Church, Uxbridge, were entertained by the . Port Perry branch. A party of near- ly forty motored over for the occasion. The visitors gave the program for the evening and a delightful one it proved to be. The local members supplied refreshments and after the concluding ceremonies the party broke up, all having enjoyed the evening. EN SEE ENJOYABLE SUPPER . AND CONCERT AN Last Friday evening the Ladies' Bible Class, in the United Church, gave a very enjoyable supper and concert. The affair was well at- tended. After the supper a good program was given by the following artists: The Sunday School Orches- tra; Vera Williams, child radio artist; Miss Marion Goode, Miss Helen Mel- low, A.T.C.M., Misses Valde Hortop and Helen Willard, and Miss Enid Wallace, Juvenile Orchestra, and the Stone Trio--Misses Mary and Graca Stone and Master George Stone. Rev. Mr, Richards occupied the chair. These social events are much ap- preciated. mm m--~ HON. WILLIAM SMITH ACTIVE AT 83 YEARS Hon. William Smith, lifelong resi- dent of Columbus, and noted politician of South Ontario, celebrated his 83rd birthday on November 16th. In spite of his years, Mr. Smith is still taking an active interest in community af- fairs, although he retired from active politics in 1921. Since that time he has lived quietly in the village of Columbus in a cottage near the farm where he was born and where he lived for many years. Having been elected Conservative candidate for the Provincial House in 1 1882, he had a very active political life until 1921, when he was defeated by the Liberal candidate Lawson O. Clifford. Between the years of 1882 and 1921 he sat in 22 session of Par- liament and never once was he in the Opposition. Mr. Smith makes the proud boast that he has sat in Par- liament with every man who later be- came Premier of Canada, and that Sir George Foster is the only man living who can make the same state- ment. Twenty-three of those with whom he sat in the House died during the past year, Mr. Smith has been President of the Maple Leaf Fire Insurance Company since its beginning in 1895. He is re- garded as one of the best farmers in the district, and an excellent judge of cattle and horses. On the 7th of November Mr. Wm. | Hern celebrated his 83rd birthday. Of the eighty-three years of his life, seventy-three have been spent in Port Perry. He has seen this beautiful village grow from a tiny hamlet in the bush, through its palmy days when the lumbering industry was at its height, and the population of Port Perry was about 2000; to the present time when Port Perry is remembered with pleasure by residents and visit- ors, : Mr. Hern, who is still keen of mind, and able to sharpen the saws of the lumber mill, has always been asso- ciated with that concern. remembrance is of the time when he, as a lad of eleven years, piled flour barrel staves at 5d per thousand. Through all the varying fortunes of the lumber mill and sash and door factory, Wm. Hern has had constant employment until his age forbid the hard day's work. Even yet he goes down to the mill to fix the saws as occasion requires. It is interesting to list the succes- sive owners of this lumber business, for it passed through many hands. The owners were: Bowerman Bros., Bigelow & White, Bigelow & Trounce, Paxton, Bigelow & Trounce, W. J. Trounce & Co., James Carnegie, Carnegie Bros., Farmers' Union Mill- ing Company, and now The Sam N. Griffen Lumber Co.
