Startling information regarding the increase of taxation in Ontario com- pared with the growth of the popula- tion has been made public by the On- tario Committee on Economy in Pyb- lic Fi a rep thirty-one Ontario municipalities formed for the purpose of acquainting the public of this Province with the actual state of public finance in On- tario, and to co-operate with the Pro- vincial and the municipalities with & view to restricting governmental ex- penditures and reducing the present all-too-heavy burden of taxation. -. The Committee finds that in 1904-5 the total direct provincial taxation in Ontario amounted to $1,129,866. In 1930-1, this had been increased to the enormous sum of $32,854,982 --a growth of 2800%. In that same period the population of the Province in-| creased less than 75%, The largest single item of taxation in 1930-31 was the gasoline tax, which netted the Province $10,950,645, tax was non-existent.
