Oshawa, and Miss Sarah Crandell, of Detroit, is going to spend some months in town. It is a pleasure to welcome Mrs. J. Hoppett, of Teignmouth, Devon, Kng- land, to Port Perry. Mrs. Hoppett is making her home with her uncle, Rev. W. P. Brown. Mr. Stainton, of Preston, Arkansas, U.S.A., who has been staying with his sister, Mrs. D. Ferguson, has returned on his motor trip home after having spent a most enjoyable time visiting with relatives and friends. Mrs. Forman and Miss Margaret Forman, of Whitby, were in town for the week end. Miss Jean Cawker, of Toronto, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs, A, B. Cawker. Mr. A. J. Carnegie is moving into the Jas. Carnegie house on Queen St. The local 14th Platoon, of D. Co., Ontario Regiment, are to go to the Port Hope ranges, on Saturday, -May 20th, for a practice shoot. ANNOUNCEMENT Prior to her departure for Arthur, Mrs, B. D. Henry will receive on Kri- day, May 19th, from 3 to 6 o'clock. EMPIRE DAY CELEBRATION The annual Empire Day celebration of the pupils of the Public School and 1.0.D.E. will take place in the School Assembly Hall, at 245 on Tuesday afternoon, May 23rd. A program of patriotic songs and selections will be given by the pupils. Grass is growing good, which is of great benefit for the cattle which have been turned out to pasture earlier in the season. A real enjoyable time was held by those who attended the "Hard Times" afternoon tea, which the Women's Association put on last Thursday. After the business session was over, a good program was given which con- sisted of readings by Mesdames Totton, Dickson and Chisholm, recita- tion by Mrs.. Mitchell, solos by Mesdames Price and Harrison, fol- lowed" by a duet by Mrs. Lane and Mrs. Harrison. After closing this part of the meeting. a very dainty lunch was served and much enjoyed by all, This gathering was arranged in honour of "Our Mothers". M. 8. of Port Perry United Church held their regular meeting /in the S. 8. room on Wednesday, May 10th, The President, Mrs. Farmer, 'l occupied the chair. A feature of the meeting was the number of members who took 'an active part. The program was in charge of Miss L. Stovin, who read the devotional leaflet. The various Watch- tower topics were responded to inter- estingly by the ladies in charge of each, Mrs. Elliott led in prayer. Six ladies assisted. Timms, of Searboro, has been spending a few days with her brother Mr. Albert Timms. Mr. W. D. Dyer, of Columbus, was the guest of Mr, Levi Tordiff, on Sun- day. The Junior Boys' Soft Ball team of Ashburn. played the boys here last week, the-game ended with a large score in favour of Myrtle. On Mon- day night the home team played the Prospect boys and succeeded in again being the winners. Mr. Isaac T. Knight, of Prince Albert, called on friends\ here last week. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Burroughs and family, in the death of their little daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Maynard and family, of Brooklin, visited at Mr. Jim. Cooper's, on Sunday. Mrs. J. A. Carmichael, Mrs, Hattie Hudgins and Mrs. Edward Mole, were in Toronto, on Thursday. daughter, called. on friends here on Saturday. Ministers and Choirs Exchange The exchange of choirs and mini-sters between Lindsay and Port Perry United Churches proved that in both places there is fine musical talent and oratorical ability. The Lindsay choir under the leadership of Mr. Taylor, showed fine balance and volume. Every number in the pro- gram, which was quite extensive, was most enjoyable, Rev. Dr. Holling gave an unusual treatment of the Mothers' Day sub- ject, taking Mary the mother of Jesus as the central character of his ad- dress. He claimed that Roman upon the position of Mary; but that Protestants had neglected this lovely character, and had ignored the com- mand so 'clearly given-- 'What soever he says unto you do it." Obedience to that command weuld transform the world. This is the third exchange of choirs and ministers between Port Perry and neighbouring towns. They have all been most enjoyable.
