Scillgog Citizen -- Tuesday, October 8, 1901 -- 11 a 'ENTERTAINMENT Godfather lll a pale shadow of the original The Godfather Part I11 Now available on video. When we last left Don Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), he had just 'ordered the murder of his brother, watched as his wife left him, and firmly consolidated his power as the most powerful mafia leader in North America. He sat alone on his estate at Lake Tahoe remembering the times before him, morally cor- rupt, a lost soul. That final scene in The Godfather Part II (1974) was haunting to us because we had watched Michael become this cold, ruthless monster over the course of two films. In the first film, The Godfather (1972), he had been the + son who wanted no part of the fam-. ily crime business, yet was drawn in when his father was nearly mur- dered by, rival thugs. Over the course of that film he was guided by the Godfather, Don Vito Corleone, portrayed by Marlon Brando, and upon his father's death took command of the Corleone family. In a single swipe, he wiped out his enemies, becoming all pow- erful, yet in the second film we see how that very power has'left Michael corrupted, a perverse and twisted soul. . In Francis Ford Coppola's ¥he Godfather Part IH (1990) now available on video, Al Pacino is again portraying the role of Michael Corleone. This time it is 1979, Michael is diabetic, sixty, and racked with guilt about his crimes. His marriage to Kay (Diane Keaton) has ended. in divorce, he lives in shame over having his brother killed, and longs for redemption. This seems to come to him in the form of the Catholic Church, which has worked out a financial deal that will allow Michael to leave behind his life of crime, becoming legitimate for the first time in his life. Yet, despite the fact he desperately wants out, the high- er up he goes in the dealings with the Vatican, the more corrupt the dealings become. It quickly becomessevident that Michael is a marked man unless he takes care of his ies first. The question is, no longer has the will to gover the i death in the firsi-film. Movie Corleone family, he needs to find "geQuels arerarely better than the some geod within himself. His nephew Vincent (Andy Garcia) seems more than capable of running the Corleone family, but proves to be dangerous; a hot-head who kills without thinking about it. Michael can turn to no one else, so entrusts his family to Vincent, with dire, tragic consequences. What occurs IS first film, but this film was an exception, Darker, richer in texture, it details the slow corruption and decay of Michael, juxtaposed with Viw's rise to power in the early part of the century. Robert'de Niro portrayed Vito as a young man, giving a stunning perfor- mance that brought out thel shattering, by virtue of} Al Pacino's remark- able performance as at the flicks the aging Don Michael. All that he john foote has done in the course of his life, the killings, the orders of execution, come crashing in on him in such a way that he is forever morally destroyed. It is not Michael who is killed, but the light of his life. His reaction is one of the great moments in film, an ago- nizing, raw scream that comes from the very depths of the soul. Both Coppola and Pacino must have realized how daring a moment this would be on film, but it has such'primal power, how could it notwork? ¥ "The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part 11 (1974) are two of the gfeatest American films ever made. Both are brilliant, warped variations on the success of the American dream by an Italiaw mafia family. When released in 1972, The Godfather was hailed as the most important movie since Citizen Kane (1941), proving to be an enormous hit with audiences as well as the critics. Marlon Brando's superb performance as the aging Don Corleone is now leg- end, winning an Oscar for best acter, and giving a much needed rebirth to Brando's career. As well, theycareers of Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall were Aaunched -- all received Oscar ffominations for supporting actor. The film itself won best picture, although Cdppola was not awarded the best director award, despite winning the coveted Directors' Guild Award just weeks before. In 1974, The Godfather Part II can he? 4 We see him break down and sob like a child in an astounding con- fession to a priest, weeping the tears of shame that he has kept locked inside fof' so Ps. The Godfather Part 11 won six Academy Awards, includ- ing best picture, best director and best supporting actor (DeNiro), although it is forever the Academy's shame that Pacino lost for best actor. Director Francis Ford Coppola had great impact on cinema in the '70s, changing how we perceive films as art, yet also changing thie an form uself. The Godfather and The Godfather Part 11 were the first films to look at the world of orga- nized crime as a business, it was what these family men did for a living. If they had to commit mur- der to solve a problem, so be it, they were quick to point out it was just business. The acting in the films was astounding, taking screen acting to new heights, influ- encing all films since made. Coppola then ran away to the jungles to make the decade's great- est film, Apocalypse Now (1979), a searing portrait of the Viet. Nam war that explores man's heart of darkpess. oo To list the 10 best films of the "70s, you would find three of those films directed by Coppola. Yet in the '80s, he faltered greatly, and in 1990, Paramount offered him The Godfather 111, over which he would have full control. They lied...and it shows, Paraffiount got nervous as the budget soared. Coppola's slow methodical style was affecting the editing process, and he cast his daughter in a.crucial role. There are glimpses of the Coppola genius at work, but hig majestic styles and brilliance ar¢ never con- sistent engugh to make the film work as a whole. Mich of the plot i& plodding, often too slow 10 get inter- ested in, and some of the characters are simply not believable. character Tom has been absent from the screen for far too long, and it was terrific to see him last year as Michael Corleone, and in Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy as Big Boy. Strangely enough, he was ignored fora best actor nomination, yet nominated for supporting actor for Dick Tracy! Coppola's The Godfather Part 111 was a major disappointment last year because it was expected to be as great as the two previous. Nevertheless, it managed seven Oscar nominations including best picture and director. In watching the film I am sure you will become aware of how great it MIGHT have been had Coppola been left alone 10 work, and how rather ordinary it Hagen, who was vital to the plofs is. Definitely worth seging if you of both previous films as Michael's * adopted brother and lawyer. He is: replaced by George Hamilton (?) in a virtually silent role! Sofia Coppola is indeed awful as Michael's beloved daughter. Talia Shire is dreadful in reprising her role as Connie, Michaels sister. And Eli Wallach is out and out 'embarrassing as a treacherous old Don.Pacino's performance is mag- nificent, a harrowing portrait of a man consumed by guilt and shame, trying in vain to find the.redemp- tion he can never have. Al Pacino have seen the other two, but a pale shadow of what the first two films are. Francis Ford Coppola is among the more gifted filmmakers alive, and his great films, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Apocalypse Now, and Rumble Fish, are among the very best ever made. He is still at work creating a new version: of Dracula, and it is my hopeghe firids his stride again. There is nothing more thrilling than. seeing a Coppola film, when he's at his® best.
