MoJacks win the first one by John B, McClelland. If this is any indication of what's to come, Junior C hockey fans in Port Perry are going to enjoy themselves this season, The Port Perry-MoJacks cele- brated the start of their 20th season Sunday night at the Scugog Arena with a free-wheeling, hard hitting 7-6 victory over rival Little Britain Merchants. The two teams battled back and forth through 60 minutes of regula- tion before Brett Puckrin settled thelaffair with 1:41 left in the five minute sudden death OT, The rookie defenseman gath- cred up a rebound and made no mistake puting the puck behind Merchant netminder Don Flenfing. Puckrin got the goal, but it was Clair Cornish who made it happen, just as he did all evening. Cornish, in his first game as a MoJack after two seasons with the Oshawa Generals, made a serious contribution to Sunday's win with two goals and three assists. On the OT winner, he swept in from the right side, got off a decent shot and the rebound-ended up on the stick of Puckrin. The game could hardly be described as a classic as there were plenty of missed passes, erratic shooting and defensive miscues on both sides. But it was wide open, quick-paced and despite the score goaltenders fan Cooper for the MoJacks and Brad Proulx for the Merchants made some difficult saves. And the game featured hard hitting as both teams showed no hesitation to "play it physical." It was anybody's game to win (or lose) and late in the contest it looked like the Merchants just might spoil the 20th birthday party for the MoJacks. Sheldon Evers broke a 5-5 tie at the 16:30 mark, taking advantage of some sloppy defensive work deep in the MoJack zone. But that 6-5 lead didn't stand up very long as veteran John Lally sent the game into OT with 1:54 left in regulation. He snared a loose puck in front of the Merchant cage, spun and fired from 20 feet out to beat Proulx to the stick side. MoJacks drew first blood in this one as newcomer Kevin Bagshaw opened the scoring midway through the first on a power play. * The goal was set up nicely by veteran Jim Vemon who cut from the left side, fed a pass in front and Bagshaw had the open net. Merchants tied things as Steve Black showed his razzle dazzle skills going around the defense to beat lan Cooper on the back-hand. But with 1:56 left, Cornish got Trumbull and Dave Holiday doing his first of the night and the new scason with Vernon and Bagshaw collecting the assists. He put a nifty back-hand move on the goalie and then flipped it home. Merchants collected three power play goals in the middle frahe with Steve Roberts, Steve the damage. Cornish replied for the MoJacks from Mike Coulson and Bagshaw. Jim Vernon got his first of the season early in the third on a sel- up from Cornish and-defenseman Frank Kavanaugh got his figst also on a set-up from Cornish. FY This was a fairly rugg c between two teams that have plen- ty of size up front and mlong the * blue line. And it was chippy in places with the Merchants called for 15 minors and the MoJacks 11, including one against Cornish in the OT for checking from behind. Some of the new MaJacks who had decent first outings included Bagshaw, Mark McKay, Scott Erickson and Chad Lefevbre. Gavin Cochrane 'and Brett Puckrin had good games along the line with Cochrane leaving in the second with a cut on the forehead. Ian Cooper got the nod in goal and faced 27 shots.
