- Parking peeves Don Gray has a polite message 10 motorists in Scugog Township. "Please don't park in the the spots designated for the handi- capped." The Port Perry resident who was diagnosed with multiple s¢le- rosis last year told the Citizen he's speaking for all people with handicaps. He said the problem of vehicles taking the designated spots for the handicapped seems to be most serious on Queen Street (especial- ly the single spot in front of the Post Office) And the problem seems to be getting worse, he stated. "Maybe people just argg't aware or maybe they just don't care, but those spots: are dgsignat- ed for a reason," he said. He said the designated spots are clearly marked with the blue and white sign. "I hope people don't think I'm nasty about this," he said, but "it's a real problem for us." Don is able to get around slow- ly with the use of a cane, and this summer, he didn't mind (Qo much having to walk from the lot béhind the post office. But he doesn't relish the thought of having to do this all winter, picking his way through * the ice and snow, And he said there are people whose handicaps are more severe than his who must use walkers or are in wheelchairs, They really need access to the designated spots. He said he has no complaints over Township by- lagv enforce- ment. "They can't #& out there writing tickets all the timé." But he notes that the fine is $150. Don hopes that a little public awareness and a gentle reminder will go a long way in improving this situatil§in for all those with, handicaps.
