Rotary welcomes District Governor Port Perry Rotarians were chal- lenged to "Look Beyond Yourself" as District 7070 Governor Ross Brethour paid a visit fo the club's weekly meeting on October 9. "Look Beyond Yourself" is the theme chosen for this year by International Rotary President Raja Saboo of India. Mr. Bréthour said this theme involves several facets in that it calls on Rotarians everywhere to determine what their needs are in their own communities and beeome actively involved in work- ing towards meeting those. needs. Of primary concern this year ~~are-ways to combat illiteracy both at home and abroad, and the des- perate need to relieve starvation and malnutrition in so many coun- tries and hunger, especially amang children, right here in Canada, Mr. Brethour said. Some studies have shown that in Canada alone there are in excess of 800,000 children under: 16, liv- ing below the poverty line. And many of them go off to school each day hungry. He said several Rotary Clubs here in Ontario have taken on pro- jects to provide thesestudents with nourishing breakfasts, "It may be hard to believe, but this kind of thing (children going hungry) is happening here (in Canada) Mr. Brethour is governor for District 7070, which has 54 Rotary Clubs. He has been a member of the Aurora Club since 1967. * A native of Uxbridge, he spent much of his working life as.a teacher and principal in York Region.
