The happy couple now resides in Stouffville. v * Over the course of the year, I have said many times that Hollywood saves the best films until the end of the year when they are more likely to attract attention lead- ing to Oscar nominations. go The twopvery best films of the holiday seasoh contain brilliant lead- ing peMormances from actors long overdue the attention they are , receiving for their work. " What adds to the excitement, the * films are superb works of art, both among the year's best motion pie: tures. Bugsy, the new. film from direc- tor Barry Levinson (Rain Man) is a stylish biography of gangster Benjami producing and writing. Yet never in his career has Beatty command the screen as he does in Bugsy. all but Blows everyone off the screen, with the exception of Ben Kingsley, who is menacing as Meyer Lansky. Barry. Levinson has quickly" become one of the finest directors currently working in the cinema, creating something different with each film. With Bugsy, hé was behind the 8-ball because of the many mob films released in the last year. However, he is a very smart u rector, having the good se to let us inside the] # "Bugsy" Siegel, the man who john h. foote essentially invent- ed Las Vegas. Sicgel was already atthe flicks AS a notorious gang- ster when he came to Hollywood, the town that cast its spell on the man who earned the nickname "Bugsy" by virtue of a terrible tem- per that caused him to go "buggy." Levinson's bold film traces Siegel's obsession with creating Las Vegas, his stormy relationship with actress Virginia Hill, 10 his violent death at the hands of his partners Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano. Director Levinson is intelligent enough to make the film glam- ourous enough without glorifying the life of Siegel, never allowing us to forget that Siegel was a dangerous man, no matter how charming. Warren Beatty gives the perfor- mance of his life as Siegel, a role in which I thought he was miiscast. I was wrong. Beatty is remarkable throughout this movie, igniting screen as he never has before. to convey both the charm is Px HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY Carly Vehof | on | January 9th, 1992 Love from All of your Family HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY Cody JAN. 4th, 1992 Love - Mom and Dad, Uncle Ernie, Aunt Shelly, Great Grandma McNeill . A lovipg father and husband, Siegel did not give killing anyone in his path a moment's thought. He Just did it. Known for his volcanic temper, he often acted rashly, which infuriat- ed his partners, who preferred a lower prlffile. It is to Beatty's credit that he captures the essence of Siegel, for once, conquering that movie star mystique that surrounds him. He has camed a reputation as a fine -maker, winning an Oscar for dirCcting Reds (1981) with nom- inations for his acting, directing, tind of Siegel, giving us| the chance to try to find " but what makes this guy tick. There arc supporting perfor- mances from Harvey Keitel, Annette Benning, and a marvellous cameo from Elliet Gould (back from the dead...or dinner theatre circuit) but the oné to watch is Ben Kingsley. He collected a 1982 Oscar for his work in Gandhi, and may just grab another this year. In the vein of both Godfather films and Goodfellas, Bugsy is a probing, intelligent look into the life of a gangster. Beatty's performance dominates the film. It is remarkable, a pleasant, thrilling surprise. I walked out of Barbra Streisand's new film The Prince of Tides with one thought: they should forget about the Oscar nominations for best * actor and just hand the award to Nick Nolte. As Tom Wingo, the anguished, tortured southerner of Par Conroy" 's novel and screenplay, Nolte gives one of the most astound- ing performances ever captured on film, I am not hen I remember seeing a performance that affected me as deeply as Nolte did through- out this film. It seems to take us on a journey into a man's soul, as he attempts to come to terms with a past he cannot escape. Director Strei 3 "The best 'until last confrontation with himself and his frightening past. Wingo, has come 10 New York City to be with his famous sister, a "poet who has again attempted sui- cide. Her doctor Susan Lowenstein (Streisand) wants to speak to Wingo 10 uncover the young 'woman's past, perhaps: to find out why she is so disturbed. Her conversations with. Wingo probe into.a violent childhood in the deep south, in which the children's only escape was to withdraw from the violence that dominated their lives. Tom has become a cynical self-loathing man, who jokes to mask the horrors he bears in his memo- ry. Lowenstein's gentle ~~ manner allows him the chance to come 1 8 [face wo face with his demons, which are as unspeakable as we believe them to be. Nolte, always a fine actor, has never had a role suth as this. There are moments of heart-wrenching power that could easily have become maudlin had Nolte and Streisand not kept the scenes true. The agonizing confession scene, as Tom uncovers his darkest secret, is searing in its purity of power. The haunting look that has been within tom's eyes, comes to full light, as we the audience come to understand why this poor man is so wracked with guilt, so burdened with shame. Streisand the director does just fine, creating a superb film with exceptional supporting perfor- mances including her own. Kate Nelligan is marvellous as Tom's cold, tough mother and while her scenes are far too short, Melinda Dillon creates a fragile Savannah, the suicidal sister. The surprises in the cast are George Carlin, the stand-up comic who gives a nice bite to his scenes as Tom's friend, and.Jason Gould, Streisand's real- life son, who portrays her angry off- spring. The performances work together to create an-ensemble what more than ably portrays the astounding work of Nolte. with a hands the film over to Nolte, ay the great actor dominate every scene he is in, exploring the depths of the character as he races towards the The 209 MARY STREET, PORT PERRY (416) Paul Van Camp" CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT 204 Casimir Street, * PORT PERRY Ontario LIL 1B7 (416) 985-9725 =< PERSONAL TOUCH os Floral Specialists - Elegant Flower Arrangements > Silk, Fresh, Weddings, Funerals - Gift Baskets - Balloons 9360 2.5 . One thing is for sure, Nolte's performance will go down in the annals of film history as one of the greatest displays of acting in cinema. Brilliant, daring and intelligént from start to finish, The Prince of Tides is a prince of movie: Bravo to all involved for creating , Conrows novel to utter perfection. I had some doubts whether Streisand could do justice to Conroy's sprawl- ing novel, but she never steps a- stray, be it the golden coloured flashbacks that are to be stained in blood, through to the powerful reve- lation that will shock you, but never leave you.
