That's why Heather Lawrence felt pretty good on opening the January issue of Teen magazine where her poem "The Country" was published in the "rhyme and reason" section It's the first poem the 18-year grade 13 student at Port Perry High School has had published, and she's hoping it won't be the last. While pleased to sec her verse in print, Heather told the Citizen it's also a bit un-nerving to think that a lot of strangers will be reading her words. Like many authors and writers, she is her own toughest critic and always thinks there is room for improvement. Heather has submitted two poems ("The Country" and "1 Think of You Quite Often") for publication in the National Library of Poetry (New York) a hard-bound collection of some 3,000 poems that 1s duc out in March Considering there were some 60,000 poems submitted, she is very pleased that two of hers have bécaselected Heather began writing poetry a couple of ycars ago and comes up with verse "any time, any place." She keeps her note-book with her most of the time just in case "an idea pops into my head." When that happens, she immedi- ately puts the words to paper She describes her poetry as "from the hean, what [ feel," some umes with a social message, but so far she is steering clear of political themes She has ys enjoyed writing, though poelry was not her first choice. In fact, when in grade nine she completed a 250 page book It's a fantasy teen novel," she explains with a smile, adding that she has 10 do some more work on it Heather plans 10 continue with poetry and will continue to try to have her work published But she's not planning a career as a writer.
