wp 18 - Scugog Citizen - Tu sday, January 14, 1992 'Should have been a good eens for MoJacks by John B. McClelland It should have been the icing on a preity good weekend for the Port Perry MoJacks. After winning a league game Friday night in Lakefield 7-4 and then putting on a fine show at the 18th annual Junior C All-Star game Saturday afternoon in Cobourg, the MoJacks were poised to make it three in a row Sunday night at homg to the Liule Britain Merchants. A victory would have assured the team could finish no worse than tied for first. But a serious lapse mid-way through the final period allowed Merchants to fire four un- answered goals in under three minutes time and the MoJacks found themselves on the short end of the 7-6 score when the final bell sounded. With what looked like a com- fortable 6-3 lead, the MoJacks suddenly hit the skids at the 9:12 mark when Merchant captain Greg Corneil tipped one past Marc Dekker on the power play. A minute later, Jason Budden converted a two on one break with the Merchants short-handed no less, and then 11 seconds after that, Corneil tied things at 6-6 with a shot that went through Dekker's pads. But the visitors weren't fin- ished as 18 seconds later, Blaine Harris found the net with a shot along the ice and the shell- shocked MoJacks were trailing this one 7-6. That's how it ended as the MolJacks were not able to muster Ted Griffen, photo right, presents the Lake Scugog Lumber Bonsplel trophy Saturday night to Don Beaton and Randy Grant. Not present for photo were Barry Acton, skip, Greg Timbers and Ron Parish. THe team finished first with 48 points. Runner-up, photo below, was the team of Earl Mayes, Duncan Campbell, Steve Quantrlil, and Dennis Syms, who fin- ished with 45 points. This Is the 28th year for this men's bonsplel at the Port Perry Curling Club. P.O. Box 819, Fenelon Falls, Ontario KOM 1NO much offense in an effort to at least get a tie out of it. Other marksmen for the visi- tors were Dan Wist, Dave Holliday and Steve Roberts. Twice in this game, MoJacks had three-goal leads (4-1 and 6-3) only to see them evaporate into thin air. It is this lack of consis- tency that has plagued the team over the last month or so and is causing lots of concern for coach- cs Ken Harman and Garnet Warriner, For the Molacks Sunday evening, the scoring was spread around among six players as Mike Coulson, Peter Young, Dan Sluggett, Jim Vernon, Brad Menzies and Kevin Bagshaw got the puck past Megchant goalie Brad Proulx. MoJacks were thin along the blue line in this one with Frank Kavanagh out with the flu, Gavin Cochrane out with a bruised wrist and Brian Shelfoon still serving a suspension. And Marc Dekker faced 48 hunks of rubber thrown his way by the hard-driving and hard-hitting Merchants Last Friday evening in Lakefield, the teams were score- less of 20 minutes, but five goals in the second gave MoJacks a 5-2 and they carried that to a 7- 4 win over the last place Chiefs Troy English, Gavin Cochrane, Scott Erickson and Jim Vernon with two did the scoring in the second. And Vernon got a rare goal with one second left on the clock On a face-off deep in the Molack zone with four seconds to play, Chiefs gambled to yank goalie Jeff Pigeon for the extra attacker Menzies won the draw cleanly and Vernon fired the length of the ice for an empty netter. Jarrett Harman and Coulson rounded out the scoring in the final 20 minutes. Menzies had three assists in this one, with Jeff Barr and Kevin Bagshaw collect- ing two each. # Scott Booth had two for the Chiefs with singles to Allan Medhurst and Mike Bullock. They host the Cougars this Sunday at 7:30, then pay a return visit to Cobourg Monday night. Here's something of a rarity, pointed out by long time MoJack fan Elmer Lee. On January 12, 1975, the old Flamingos had a record of 22 wins and two ties for 46 points, identical to the record sported by the MoJacks on January 12, 1992, 17 years later. Some of the youngest members of the Port Perry Minor Assoc. put on a mini-game between peri- ods Sunday evening and these youngsters were flying all over the ice. They were a joy to watch and no doubt a few future MoJacks among them. Little Britain, Cobourg and Bowmanville are in a real dog- fight for second spot in the League, with thé Merchants hav- ing a two-point bulge over the Eagles. The regular schedule ends February 2 and there are going lo be some very interesting playoff rounds this spring.
