By Janet Banting Tired of junk mail? You're not the only one! So many folks are fed up with it that a coalition group has formed in Toronto in an attempt to find solutions to the problem. They have declared March 13, 1992 as National Junk Mail Return Day in Canada, and here is what they suggest you do; Start saving all those unwanted flyers. From thethigh pressures of designing labels and packages for well known household prod- ucts to just sketching cartoon characters for his own enjoy- ment, this affable 42-year old Scugog resident knows both sides of the art world. And these days, he says with a smile, he's quite content to put some fun back into his drawing and sketching. For the past three weeks, Rob's cartoons have appeared on the editorial page in the Scugog Citizen, and-readers may have noticed his eye for detail and subtle sense of humour. And he's starting to generate some interest in. commissions for his work, in particular personal colour caricatures. These days, when he's not working at the easél, he's work- ing long, cold hours pumping gas at the Cango Gas Bar south of Port Perry. It's not sofething he'll do for the rest of his life, but for the time being......he shrugs and says "it's a job and it pays the bills." And it gives him time to dab- ble away with cartoons, carica- he said recently. They make a great gift foSports teams or individuals (most honest golfer or bowler, the player who strikes out the most, etc) A personal caricature with a touch of humour to it is some- thing people enjoy getting and keeping, he said. Rob is mostly self-taught as an artist and started when he was old enough to pick up a pencil or brush. In fact as a youngster, he incurred the wrath of his parents by painting the front of the fami- ly home in Scarborough in oils, as well as the back of his Dad's new car and freshly sanded hard- wood floors: For many years he worked for Colgate as a graphic designer and then spent ten years in part- nership with his father in Eli Craddock Associates in Toronto. tures, sketches, or anything else that pops into his head. He loves to draw. Even when working in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of commercial graphics and design, he never lost the desire to sit and draw. What he found stressful was dealing with clients, trying to satisfy. their whims and demands. "There were always a lot of / headaches," he recalls. Like the _design for a soap wrapper that took nine months of steady work before.the corporate client was satisfied with it. But these days, art is fun for Robert. And that's the way he wants it, for the time being any- ways. He admits though, that some day, opening a small commercial studio in the Scugog area would appeal to him.
