McCagherty began his police career with the Metro Toronto force in 1965, and a year later, joined the Oshawa depart- ment. As the current deputy chief, he is chairman of the Ontario Association of Police Chiefs training committee, and the Police commitiee rep to the strategic planning committee for police, edu- cation and development. Durham's present Chief Edwards will be retir- ing this fall after a career that began in 1961. He was appointed Chief in 1988.
