Big V in the championship of A division house league Playing excellent hockey all day, the Port Perry Big V squad reached the championship A divi- sion in the House tourna- ment held at the Scugog Arena March 18. In the final, Big V came up against a strong team from Newmarket that had out-scored their opponents 17-2 in two previ- ous games. But this didn't bother the deter- mined Big V group when the play got underway. Ryan Puckrin was sharp in the first but Newmarket took a 1-0 lead on the power play. Kent Johnston made it 1-1 in Big V's Jeremy Gibson and Shawn Bellar won the 'best effort' awards for the A champlonship In the Pee Wee HL tournament held last week in Port Perry. See story for detalls. Pineridge wins! The Port Perry Pineridge Sports Atoms hosted Millbrook in an exhibition game Saturday and came out victorious by a 3-1 margin. Both offence and defence was sharp for the Atoms in this one as Dave Gainey opened the scoring in the first period off a rebeund. Chris Jones and Greg Bruton were there for the assists. Millbrook tied things up for a while and Port's goalies Chambers and Savage had to be very sharp to keep the game tied. Ian Parliament broke the deadlock late in the third with Scott Sanderson and Adam Hobbs getting the assists. And barely a minute later, this same trio made it 3-1 with Sanderson getting credit for the goal. McCready, Chambers and Brain deserve a pat on the back for their work along the line in this game. It was a solid effort all around, just the kind of effort the coaches will be looking for this weekend when the team motors down the QEW to a tournament in Buffalo. Best of luck. The Big V Pee Wee House League team enjoyed a Great day at the tournament in Port Perry last wee N to the A ch story). the second as he finished off a nice passing play from Jeff Whitfield and Jeremy Gibson. Newmarket tuined things up a notch with two goals to take a 3-1 lead but Jeremy kept the hopes alive with a nice goal as Bird and Donnelly the assists. Big V kept the pressure on and had Sumerous chances to tie things up. But as luck would have it, Newmarket potted a power play marker for a 4-2 lead and then added one more into the empty net. This was a superb game from start to finish as both teams really went all out for the victory. Even though Big V had one of the smallest teams in the tourna- ment, the boys played with huge hearts all day. In game one, Big V faced another team from Newmarket and Ryan Puckrin was really on his game in this one, in fact, noth- ing short of ular, spectac Newmarket took a 1-0 lead . before Gibson tied things from Noah Smith and Kent Johnston. The visitors took a 2-1 lead, but suddenly the Big V boys heard the alarm clock go off and exploded for five (that's right, five goals) Johnston had three and Gibson two with help from Smith (2) Doug Short, Ryan Williamson, and Nick Skerratt. Full marks for the wingers Whitfield, Short, Donnelly and Bird who skated miles to keep their checks in tow, and the defense of Williamson, Skerratt, Smith and Newman who turned in great games in front of Puckrin. The coaching staff was mighty proud of éveryone that day. And a word of thanks from the players to Mr. and Mrs. Prechitko for a well-run tournament.
