Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 28, 1003 11 da ENTERTAINMENT Two videos well worth a look Defending Your Life Directed by Albert Brooks Now available on Video This off-beat, wildly original film has been on the video shelves for a couple of months; It's one of those odd films that rarely gets rented. That is really unfortunate, because Defending Your Life is a pleasant, often buoyant times downright thought provok- ing, yet it never pretends to be anything but a comic love story. | suppose more than anything else, defending your life is fun, possess- ing an infectious charm that is utterly contagious. The Doctor Directed by Randa Haines film, that bounces along| on its own giddiness. The film is a rarity, a| john h. foote. comedy with warmth. Albert Brooks stars, as a nice enough young at the flicks man, Daniel, who is killed in a car accident. He finds himself in Judgement City (a sort of, in between, afterlife), where he 1s forced to defend his life actions. The judges will then decide if he is suitable to move on, or if he will return to earth to try it all again. While in Judgement City, Daniel meets Julia (Meryl Streep) who he falls in love with. The problem is, of course, Julia seems desuned to move on by virtue of her devotion to others throughout her life, while Daniel seems to be headed back to earth. All of this makes for a nifty twist on the afterlife questions. The film is remarkably well written by Albert Brooks, with witty, intelligent dialogue a high- light throughout. The many details of Judgement City are hilarious to see, particularly the pavilion of past lives, (hosted by Shirley MacLaine!!!), and the actual screening process in which those being judged see their lives However, I think the real appeal here are the performances of Brooks and Streep, as well as the film's good natured look at after- life. It's warm, very funny, and at Post office open later The Nestleton Station post office is among 40 postal outlets in the greater Metropolitan Toronto area that will provide extended hours of service to mid- night April 30 to accommodate customers wishing to meet the deadline for submitting their 1991 income tax return. A spokesman for Canada Post Corporation said Nestleton will be the only post office in the Scugog area to offer extended services. Other nearby outlets include Courtice, Whitby and Ajax. Postal services available will include weighing and date-stamping of returns as well as the sale of postage stamps. Sta 926 Simcoe St. N., Now available on video William Hurt stands firmly alongside Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, and Robin Williams as one of the finest actors of this gen- eration. In 1985, we won an acade- my award for best actor for his stunning work as a gay prisoner in the Kiss of the Spider Woman. Subsequent nominations followed for Children of a Lessér God (1986), and Broadcast News (1982), although he was curiously snubbed in 1988 for his poignant performance as the guilt wracked, grief stricken father in The Accidental Tounist. Hurt's best screen performance remains his heart wrenching work in the acci- dental tounst, but that is not to say a William Hurt performance is not a much awaited event. He is one of those interesting actors who is always thinking while in charac- ter; his characters are alive. It 1s Hurt's performance that keeps the The Doctor a step above maudlin, which where the of a lesser actor. As a cold physi- cian who is found to have cancer, he must adapt to being the patient. Along the way he undergoes a transformation that makes him both a finer doctor, and human being. While the script is con- trived, and Randa Haines' direc- tion is sluggish, Hurt's towering performance salvages the film bringing a truth and sincerity to his character that rings of convic- tion. Surrounded by fine actors in lesser roles, Hurt manages to make all his relationships with these people work, in particular that THSWERKS TOPS cose 1.
