wp 6 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 28, 1993 " EDITORIAL Bouquets & bricks First the bouquets, then the bncks To the members of the Pon Perry Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs, and anyone cise who had anything to do with the Proud to be Canadian Flag tour that arrived in Scugog Saturday It was just a great day. made one feel truly proud to be a citizen of this great country You had to see the look of excitement on the faces of the youngsters who ran the flag into Pon Perry carly Saturday moming The unfurling of the very large flag in Palmer Park at noon hour was a moving sight as well Too bad the weatherman just didn't want lo co-operate very much for the festivities on Saturday. but the cold wind and the slate grey sky that threatened rain perhaps were typs cal of a late spring day in this country But the weather no doubt had eemething to do with the disappointing tum out of people Organizers had been hoping for more Sull. 1t was a good day and the Kinsmen and Kincties of Pont Perry, president Dave Goldberg. National Kin president Dave Robinson ( who lives in Pont Perry) worked long and many more 1d not hard on the preparations and their efforts should not go un noticed A ip 1 1 weekend tha [3 " 13 1] wry and businesses in Port Perry had flags stolen over the weekend and the pnts seemed 10 be busiest late Sunday might or carly Monday moming Not content just to steal the Canadian flags. those responsible also did damage to the polls What in the Lord's name has got into people these days that they have to reson to stealing Canadian flags flown proudly in front of homes and places of business The flag of a country 1s something special even if its worth just a few dollars, is an especially ugly kind of crime We would hope that if a flag stcaler is ever caught in the act and brought to face justice. the courts would hand down punishment more severe than just a hight slap on the wnsts Some people think a public flogging is not severe enough but in this day and age. that's out of the question Sill, the theft of the national flag leaves a feeling of anger and disappointment Finally. one would think that with all the publicity the environment has received over the past few years, our coun tryside would be almost spotless Not so, by a long shot, as about 20 volunteers found out Sunday aftemoon cleaning up along the Highway 7A cause way just cast of Pon Perry They collected more than 80 garbage bags of filthy trash, stuff that had been just tossed away Plastic cups and con tainers of all sizes, styrofoam bait holders. pop cans and bot- tes, large chunks of cardboard, disposable diapers, and an assortment other trash Talk about a throw-away world Talk about an assault on the senses to see this junk. not to mention an assault on the shoreline of Lake Scugog And that was but one small stretch of Canada, maybe half a mile at best Stolen flags. bags and bags of trash collected from the shoreline of a beautiful lake What a statement about a soci ety that claims to be civilized Makes one wonder just what, if anything, is ticking inside the heads of a few people If the flag stealers are brought to justice, they should be handed a shovel and a rake, and made 10 work cleaning up Lake Scugog's shoreline But even that might be 100 muchgo ask in this day and age To steal one ONIN IG 2 i 3 '" p ; M fm Od = 4 AA A NM ~v YY yr ; | KNOW 1TS' BEEN WET THIS MONTH.
