Jayne was 'Good Company! It wasn't a big crowd, but the Scugog Women crowd was big with self-esteem following an inspiring workshop by CKVR 'Good Company' host Jayne Stafford. About 50 women (and one man) attended the dinner/work- shop held by Scugog Women, last Wednesday evening at the Country Oven Restaurant. After indulging in a roast beef and Yorkshire pudding dinner, the women sat back to hear the one man in the crowd, Larry Emmerson of Port Perry, introduce the guest . "| find ber intriguing 10 sit and listen to," Mr. Emmerson said, after describing how he met Jayne Stafford on a press junket many years ago. Ms. Safford has been in Port Perry before, notably 0 produce a feature on Cyan Star Morgan horse farm, last summer. And as always, she enjoyed her visit 10 Port Perry. "It's such a charming place," she said with a smile. Smiling seemed © be the order of the evening, maybe because the topic dealt with bow 0 improve self-esteem. "They say self-esteem is the root of our personality," Ms. Stafford said. "It's a feeling of self-worth. It's realizing you are a valuable person, just because you're you. It's not," she added, "being a braggart, it's not being boastful." Low self-esteem, she main- tained, is the reason why there are $0 many people in prisons. You might have low self- esteem if: --you need people agreeing with you all the time; . -you need constant atiention and bolstering form others; you're fearful to take action; --you're dependent on others for compliments, on what people think of you, --you boast a lot; you're critical of others; --you can't take criticism; CRYSTAL CLEAR (formerty Phototax in the Port Perry Plaza) along with our existing line of BUSINESS SERVICES and 24 HOUR PHOTO DEVELOPING we now offer * UNIQUE GIFTWARE J ° AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY * PLASTIC LAMINATION * SHIPPING SERVICE 1 you want something New & Different drop by or cal us in the PORT PERRY PLAZA 985-0918 STORE HOURS: Monday 10 Saturday 9:30 10 5:30 "May All Your Thoughts be CRYSTAL CLEAR" Wok se Fn have's compulsion to ites oon 'riry now th Why do people have low esteom? Ms. Stafford said what we are wid as children stays with us. If, for example, children are told they are lazy or bad in math, Ms. Stafford said, "They will continue to be lazy or bad in math because that's what mommy says and she knows best." Fortunately, there are many ways (0 improve seif-estoem, stan ing with shedding all the blame you have been shouldering. "That's the first thing you have to do, stop blaming yourself for past mistakes," she said. "Realize that no one's perfect." Pretty, well-spoken and self- confident, it is hard to believe Jayne Safford ever had a problem with poor self-esteem. But she did, as a teenager. So much so, she contemplated ending her life. "It was such a terrible, terrible thing," she said. "1 hated my life. | 'Old buddies' Lary Emmerson and Jayne Stafford were guests of last W honour at the Anaad: . Lar brought his world-famous charm and Jayne brought a wealth o tips for improving one's self-esteem. And she felt she wasn't a worthwhile per- son. "Believe," she said, "you're a worthwhile person. You're a person, Just b you are you." She had these suggestions to help improve low self-esteem: --appreciate yourself more. "Whenever you do something you're proud of, pat yourself on the back' --look for the positive in all things you do; --don't let outer influences affect the things you do. Putting more effort into some- thing (like a job) ofien makes you feel better about yourself. "Put more into it, you'll get more out of it," she said. "When you get more out of it, you feel beter and your self-esteem goes up." "1900 SQ.FT. CAPE COD BUILD ON YOUR OWN LOT. "I want you to think of your- selves as winners, because you are," Ms. Stafford said. And she included a copy of this poem by Nancy Sims, for people to take home, hang on their fridges, and read all the time: Winners Are People Like You Winners take chances. Like everyone else, they fear but they refuse to let fear control them. Winners don't give up. When life gets rough, they hang in until the going gets better. Winners sre flexible.
