LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reader wants option To the editor: As a parent of children involved in minor sports activi- ties in Port Perry, I can sympa- thize with the need of the vari- ous tions LO raise money to carry on their valuable efforts. But I must object to the tac- tics used when it involves jeop- ardizing the very children they represent. This week at softball, the children are being presented with 12 candy bars, which they are expected to sell to raise money for the club. As a reward, they will receive a poster and a chance to win a t-shirt. I'm sure I am not the only parent who groans and thinks "Oh, great, another $36 that 1 will have to spend" (times how- ever many kids I happen to have involved in this sport) Let's face it. Times are tough right now for everyone, and nobody appreciates having to buy something that is not needed or wanted, but expected of them. What are the alternatives? Do we send a six-year old door-to- door to relieve our own financial burden, not knowing what potential dangers could lurk on the other side of that unknown door? No, better to buy them yourself, and at least rest assured of your child' s If minor softball really depends on this funding to remain in operation, perhaps they should consider other ways of obtaining their funding, such as raising the enréliment or sponsorship fees. 1 for one would much rather pay a little more up front than feel trapped into a fund-raising endeavour which I consider not ily d for 'Hair-razing' day great for Museum To the editor: Scugog Shores Museum village was awed by the dous sup- Doug Olliffe, Scugog Citizen, and Emiel Kroonenberg, Emiel's Place, port shown by the community in the second annual yard and bake sale held on Victoria Day. The museum is waiting for a rep from Lake Scugog Lumber, Mr. ildings which only p ially dang my children, but also a waste of money for an inferior product. If this appears 10 be an attack on minor softball, I apologize, because they are not the only ones that use this method to raise money. Everything from the schools to Brownies and Cubs and other sports organizations continue to use these tactics because they need the money to stay in operation. I just feel it is time somebody took a stand on behalf of the children who are being used, and the parents, who are taking on the financial burden in many cases. I don't object to giving money to assist in the cause, but I don't want my children used in this manner any more. If funds are needed, I will give you the profits your organization would have gained by my children sell- ing the candy bars. Not only will 1 sleep better knowing that my children are safer, but I will not be stuck with junk food I don't THS WEEKS TOPS Es 1. Dol Leppard - ADRENALIZE 2. Queen - CLASSIC QUEEN 3.
