or and gents, it's sequel-mania Have you been to the movies lately? If you have, no doubt you are aware of the barrage of sequels currently in release. No kidding, we have Lethal Weapon 3, Alien 3, Meatballs 4 (tell me why, God?), and about to be released are Batman Returns, and Honey, 1 Blew Up The Kids. I have nothing against pulling focus. It's a fun time in a fun, little movie. At Play in the Fields of the Lord is a demanding, overly ambitious film that strives for greatness, but goes off in too many directions. Directed by Hector Babenco, the film depicts the lives of mis- probably because they are not try- ing so hard to give a perfor- mance. The film's most inspired moments are provided by Tom Berenger's gutsy performance as an American Indian who inte- grates into the tribe. Rarely has he given such a sionaries struggling to| bring religion to) "sequels, in fact nals. this latest bom- bardment leaves me wondering about the originality of this year's movies; it seems 1992 will be the year of the sequels, re-makes and biographies. The problem is we will not get the re-makes (Dracula, the Last of the Mohicans) or biogra- phies ( Chaplin, Hoffa, Malcolm X) until the fall. So for now we are in the midst of a sequel craze. Alien 3 is a pretty good flic, but how many times can we see Sigourney Weaver battle the ferocious alien? Weaver is a superb actress who manages to infuse the film with depth, but it is simply more of the same. That's not necessarily bad, but is it good? Movies are at their best when something fresh and daring and courageous unfolds on the screen. ' That is not the case with either Alien 3 which is frighten- ing, or Lethal Weapon 3, which manages to be exciting by virtue of the charisma of Mél Gibson and Danny Glover. What do I do when there's not much on at the movies? Video. I zipped into the Super Store and grabbed Father of the Bride, a Steve Martin comedy, and a gutsy, over-long drama called At Play in the Fields of the Lord. Of the two films, Father of the Bride is the most recognized for two reasons. One, of course is that the fact that it was a modest comic hit last Christmas and two, it's a remake of the 1950 Spencer Tracy clas A eather of the Bride Is an casy Gim to like because it caters to a mass audience. The best reason to see this film is for Martin's toyching performance as the lov- ing Dad about to lose his little native tribes deep in| the Amazon jungles. Sound familiar? The premise for the story had indeed been done before in the fine historical drama The Mission (1986) but this one is set present day, which is both its strengths and weaknesses. John Lithgow, Aidan Quinn, Darryl Hannah and Kathy Bates are Americans trying to deal with the hardships of the jungle. 1 found the fanaticism of the missionaries a little more than annoying, especially Kathy Bates' ve wife. Lithgow is interesting from and the film comes alive mjwhen he is on screen. But his ppearances are too short and what fwe are left with is Ja lot Bible spout- ing and the dread- ful performance from Bates. So why see it? Because it is different, it makes demands and demands to be listened to. There are no car chases, no monsters, no Roman Howard and Jeanette The husband and wife team of Jeanette and Howard Shanks are a popular duo at Scugog Memorial Public Library ~ they had a show of d's whimsical scull and J 's beauti- ful silks In 1985. They returned to the library gallery Saturday to open anather show, called 'Shelters, Screens and Vanished Species'. Their show continues at the library until June 19. attached to the titles, and the film was a dismal failure. However, it is courageous, often too ambi- tious, but quite often, thrilling. The movies on the big screen will improve (they always do) but for now, if you are tired of the same old fare, head to the video shop and grab one of these. That's not to say you won't enjoy Alien 3 or Lethal Weapon 3, but chances are you've seen them already. Country Pick of the Week - - Brand New Release!
