Happy birthday, all you books! Friends and staff (past and ) gathered at loft, is Grace Milne, Suzanne White, Mary Blake, present Scugog Memorial Public Library last Friday to Judy MacColl, Duncan the Dragon (the library's 9 mark the 10th birthday of the new bulid photo, above Port Perry's waterfront. in this on mascot), Andres Jones. Bonnie Guindon, Kent Farndale and As the clock ticks...let's talk Two weeks ago my column was placed on the editorial spread alongside the deep thinkers and it got me doing some pretty heavy reflecting myself. I'd especially like to respond © the doom and owned a car that was wonderful. It filled all your noeds and drove like 8 dream. It was everything you could possibly want but, as time went by, you outgrew, its capabilities. It gloom pes- simism of the editorial tha offered little of ~ marlene russell no hope for soci- "writer's blocks ely as we C down its dying seconds. It is not my intent 10 disagree with any statements put forward. The old world order is crumbling and gain- ing momentum daily. I would however, like to say that pes- simism is simply the way you choose 10 look at things. Let's say, for example, 'you Port Perry --it's for the berries Welcome to Port...um, Berry That's right. According 10 the federal government's Canada 125 newsletter, sent to mailboxes everywhere, Port Perry is now 'Port Berry'. This is how the newsletter reads: "Beard Growing & Handle Bar Moustache Contest -- Port May 18 - Sept. 19. Gentlemen! Take up the challenge, start off clean shaven (the old fashioned way, by the barber, at the Annual Yard Sale) and see what you can grow by Fall Harvest Days. Money raised will support the museum. Contact: Kim Harper (416) 985-1589." Which leads us to wonder, what kind of berry was Pont named after? Strawberry? it's probably the bumbleberry. Well, Berry or Perry, the con- test is going full-steam ahead. Among the entrants is the Citizen's own Doug Olliffe. If you'd like 10 sponsor his handle- bar moustache growing efforts, drop in 10 the Citizen office en Water St. could no longer main- they were happy and grew so well on it as a baby. What worked then won't work now, besides they ll spit it back in your face. Which is exactly what society lis doing when asked to swallow out- [ fmoded systems. Perhaps mankind is in a collective adoles- cence. Those rebel . pious years when janything goes while tain the speed neces sary 0 travel the freeway of life and as it fell apart it became total- ly unreliable. How badly can one feel when something crumbles and falls apart if it wasn't working properly anyway? The pessimist chooses to hear the rattling of the engine, see the rust and rot and wonder how 10 get around with no wheels. The optimist, on the other hand, hears the wheels turning on a distant assembly line, sees a shiny new replacement car and plans for a space in the garage. Our inclination, when some- thing isn't working, is 10 go back- wards and try again what once worked. That's like trying 10 feed formula 10 your teenager because ithe search is on for our real identity. The hope is that we find our true selves and reach maturity before inflicting more pain on our fellow man and irreparable dam- age 10 mother earth. 1 choose 10 see the upheaval as an indication that a new world is unfolding. The old world is being rolled up 10 make room for some- thing greater. As last weeks edito- rial pointed out, 'earth's clock is ticking.' The alarm has sounded. Again we must choose. Will we sleep through the waming signal or will we awake 10 help build the new world order. The big question is, who holds the blueprints? Would the Cosmic Planner please stand up?
