Joseph: non-stop wow! in B. McClelland OK, so I'm biased and should not be writing this. But what heck, I own this paper. So here goes. 1 had the chance to see one of the first full productions of 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat' at Toronto's Elgin Theatre. In a word: Wow. This is high powered swff; a glitzy, energized, toe tappin' rock and rollin' musical with Donny Osmond in the lead role of Joseph, and Broadway star Janet Metz as the Narrator. From the opening scene to the incredible finale, the show is non- stop music and dancing with special effects that are just dazzling, a marvellous treat for the eye and car. Based loosely (and 1 do mean loosely) on the Biblical fable of the coat of many colours, the show follows Joseph and his 11 jeal- ous brothers who steal his coat and sell him into slavery in Egypt. He ends up in a nasty Egyptian prison cell before finding freedom, riches and glory interpreting the Pharoah's dreams. The Pharoah, by the way, does a great musical imitation of another fairly well known King, as in Elvis, Joseph is finally reconciled with his brothers after they show up in Egypt, looking for any morsel of food to stave off starvation. 1 must admit J was skeptical on hearing that former teen idol Donny Osmond (he's now 35 and the father for four young kids) had the lead in a musical based on the Joseph fable. He wasn't my favourite singer back in the "70s when he and sister Marie were a number, but now | know how he put 23 gold records in the bag. He displayed a powerful stage voice and more than enough ener- gy, vitality and sparkle to fill the considerable demands of this role. There are some superb special effects (Donny soaring to the csil- ing of the theater in the finale) and the choreography will leave you breathless. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music and Tim Rice the lyrics for "Joseph" which was first put to the stage back in 1968. Recently revived by Webber for the London stage, it was a mighty hot tick- et, just as the Toronto production by Livent Corp. will be this sum- mer. .
