His perf in The Godfather Part II (1974) and Raging Bull (1980) have won him Academy Awards, as well as a place in movie history. His searing work as boxer Jake LaMotta in Martin Scorsese's Raging is considered by many 10 be among the greatest perfor- mances ever given by an actor. De Niro has given a wide range of pe: performances, most notably are his terrifying cabbie in Taxi Driver (1976), the Viet Vet in The Deer Hunter, the obsessive would be comic in The King of Comedy (1983), a sad, regretful gangster in by anger and rage, yet De Niro is never less than} compelling, frequent, which has slightly taken away from his mys- tique,... but not his talents. Jack Nicholson is adored by audiences and critics, ing very rare for such a fine actor. Whether it's the killer grin, or the smart aleck manner that he often infuses his characters with, Nicholson is by far the most beloved fi is career took off in 1969 with a fine sup- porting as the drunk hern lawyer in Easy {but it was his haunting performance as the bored intellect in Five Easy Pieces that sent his carcer soaring. He followed that with a series of brilliant perfor- mances in films like The Last Detail (1973), Chinatown (1974), and culminating with an Oscar for his breathtak- ing performance in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). For the past fificen years, Nicholson has stretched his acting muscles with an over the top performince in The Shining (1980), as Eugene O'Neill in Réds (1981), won a second Oscar for the astronaut in Terms of Endearment (1983), gave what many considered the best performance of 1985 in Prizzi's Honor (1985), portrayed bounced back with a fine perfor- John's favourite actors a homeless drifter in the remarkable (but ignored) Ironweed (1987), and of course, was the Joker in Batman (1989). This year he well be seen in three films; Man Trouble, a light comedy due this summer, A Few Good Men, a military drama with Tom Cruise, and this Christmas, he may go for another Oscar as Jimmy Hoffa, in Hoffa. The selection of Robin Williams may come as a sur- prise to serious movie goers, but he really should not. Williams has been displaying his great talents as an actor Despite a critical drubbjng; hej . Aer tha it was not until Good Moming Viet Nam (1987) that audi- ences and critics took notice of Williams, in fact, he grabbed a much deserved Oscar nomination for the role of the zany DJ. Next up, was a serious role in Peter Weir's brilliant Dead Poets Society (1989) which camed Williams another nomination for his sensitive perfor- mance as an unorthodox Pegtry teacher who caphures the hearts of his troubled students. Ironically, for his best screen performance, the gentle doctor in Awakenings (1990), he was not nominated, despite giving the best performance of the year!! 1991 saw Williams give an cxplosive but 0dd performancs 4s d by his past in The Fisher King (1991) and as the grown up Peter Pan in Steven Spielberg's Hood (1991). Nick Nolte finally earned recognition this year for his beilliant performance as the tortured coach in The Prince of Tides (1991%&Nolte has been around a long time, giv- ing great performances in some not so great films, which is a testament to his talents. After his dreadful debut in the thriller The Deep (1977), he gave a fine as a Viet Nam veteran addicted to drugs in Who'll Stop the Rain (1978) and jas the football star in North Dallas Forty (1979). Nolte then seemed to sleepwalk through a series of bad films, finally giving a brilliant performance in 'ceds (1987) as a convict who becomes a playwright in jail. Following that was a tour de force in Q and A (1989) as a bad cop, another superb overlooked performance. Come on guys!!! This guy was giving great performances yet all we knew him for was those stupid 48 Hour movies with Eddie Murphy! In 1991 he seemed to arrive, giving a steady performance in Cape Fear (1991), but a stunning one in The Prince of Tides that was edged out of the Oscar by Anthony Hopkins. Nolte is a classic case of a brilliant actor far better than any material he is working in, but because of his immense gifts he makes the role work Other fine actors are William Hurt, Steve Martin, Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Kline, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, Tom Cruise, Joe Pesci, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Costner and on occasion, Marlon Brando, and Gene Hackman. Absent is Dustin Hoffman, who on occasion can be quite good, but those occasions are too far and few between.
