LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reader: 'Free trade has given away our security' To the Editor: The federal Conservative government has forced Canadians to operate under a free trading arrangement with the United States since 1989. Today, we face a lack of new opportunities while at the same time whole industries close up and move south of the border causing huge losses of jobs. This phenomenon cannot be blamed entirely on the current recession. The Canadian economy is more likely in convulsive transition. Free trade has given away our seturity to produce for our own market, in exchange for the opportunity to compete for markets in the United States. The Mulroney government seems determined to base Canada's future economy arrangement will become very interdependent so that the effect will be "as one goes we all go." Our living standard in time will have to equalize in all three countries. I submit that Canadians face the greatest including job prosp on a free trading mentality. Under Free Trade we now have one "partner" to settle trade disputes, but under the proposed NAFTA, by including Mexico, our situation is becoming one based on "commune economics." "Commune + economics" dictate by their very consuming nature that we all will be affected by each other: either good or bad. The merging of economic identities which NAFTA encourages will threaten Canada's ability to maintain sovereignty and economic viability outside the commune. It becomes like a dependency habit and very hard to break. Trade is needed for a nation to sell surplus good and to bring in products not available domestically. We should instead arrange trade for "mutual benefit," and not adopt wide open free trade on the chance that such a policy will solve our present economic malaise. Both free trade and protectionism have too many faults. The solution to our trading prosperity as a nation lies more in the direction of controlling imports and exporting surplus goods that we can at a profit. Trading just for the sake of trading is ludicrous. . Canadians should be encouraged through properly structured trade agreements to produce as many goods as possible for the home market and keep Canadian dollars in our own economy to be spent again creating new activity. Let us not be so quick as a nation to totally give away our right to the domestic market for the chance of gaining more market share in the other two countries. The saying "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" might apply to our present situation. . Glenn Malcolm, Nestleton, Ontario. Sick of hearing about "NIMBY" followers To the Editor: To the ratepayers, I don't know about you, but I am sick of hearing about our Mayor Howard Hall and his "Nimbyite" followers dumping all over Premier Bob Rae and environment - minister Ruth Grier. The Mayor continues to contend that the provincial government has not considered all the alternatives to landfill durhping of our garbage. I am sure that Mayor Hall is fully aware of the government's reasons for rejecting incineration and/or transporting garbage to Kirkland Lake for disposal. Only 20 per cent of landfill garbage can be incinerated and that leaves an ash which contains concentrated amounts of non-flammable toxins which must be disposed of. Both incineration and transportation of garbage to the proposed northern site is much more costly than landfilling and both contribute to the "out of sight, out of mind" syndrom. The objective of our provincial government's policy on garbage is to reduce, as much as possible, the production of garbage. Landfilling in our own area tuates the and is far too serious a problem for the Mayor to be playing politics with. Let's face it: we are going to have a garbage dump in Durham whether we like it or not, despite the protest of Mayor Hall and his "NIMBY" followers. It is time the ratepayers of Scugog realize this and showed a more positive attitude towards garbage reduction. It is time we had less increases the incentive to reduce our garbage output. We"who produce it must dispose of it in our own locality. Obviously, the less garbage we produce, the smaller the landfill site and the less cost to dispose of it. Our garbage production and its effect on our environment litical posturing and more garbage reduction leadership from the mayor and council. This does not exonerate any individual from making a more concerte effort towards our garbage problem. We all n ed to pitch in. Roy Grierson, Port Perry.
