Wedding plans for * fall of 1993. Announcement Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Johnston, and are rushing to prepare their || - prestige films for release in |] the next four months, hoping to salvage perhaps the dullest movie year since 1966. For we, the audience, this fall and Christmas looks like a virtual feast of great films, which should more than make up for the lackluster year we have suffered through, The rather disappointing box-office of Batman Returns have put __gain the fear into the hearts of thé studio executives, who now are hoping (and praying) for a major hit with perhaps a few Oscars to ice the cake. You see that's the real race from this point on, to see what films become the frontrunners for the Academy Awards, The race becomes even closer when you realize, and understand, that not a single film released thus far this year, is worthy of a best picture nomination. Not One! Biographies No fewer than for major biégraphies will hit the screen this fall, with two of 1 them expected to create quite a stir, but perhaps all of them legitimate contenders for great reviews and perhaps "some awards. Spike Lee's controversial * biography of slain black activist malcolm X, has already been causing quite a commotion. Lee fought hard to be able to direct the film, has since fought the studio for final cut, and a three hour length. He won...and the Kaun Mon. Tues. Hopefully, director Lee will + be able to keep his over active mouth shut when the film is released, allowing the movie, not the director's views, to attention it deserves. Equally hot is Danny DeVito's film Hoffa, which features Jack Nicholson as _ the crooked labour leader who had the audacity to lock horns, with the Kennedy's. Just exactly what happened to Hoffa in the midst of his colorful career is still a mystery. The inside word on this film is very strong, despite the fact DeVito, the film's director, had to reshoot several scenes which he paid for out of his pocket. Nicholson's performance has attracted a great deal of attention, which should help DeVito be taken seriously as a director. Richard Attenborough won an Academy Award in 1982 for directing Gandhi, which also collected the best picture prize. This year Attenborough wil give us Chaplin, the life of comic genius, actor, and director Charlie Chaplin. Cast in the role of undaunting task for the finest actors, is young Robert Downey Jr. Attenborough has now available at Chaplin} "an. claimed that when the film is released Downey will become a world class actor, and a serious contender for the Academy Award. Aging from eighteen to eighty three over the course of the film, Downey mastered the tricky dialect, as well as Chaplin's distinctive mannerisms. It is director Attenborotigh's feeling, that they have captured the very soul of Chaplin. Rounding out the cast will be Dan Ackroyd as Mack Sennett, Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks, and Geraldine Chaplin, as her own grandmother. The final biography will be the second of the life stories of Columbus to reach the screen in 1992, this one obviously the better of the two. 1492, is directed by Ridely Scott (Thelma and Louise), who ¢ast Gerard Deperdieu as the stubborn explorer, and Sigourney Weaver as Queen Isabella. The film is grittier, far more realistic than the earlier release, and Scott's enormous gifts as a director should elevate this to great heights. Page to Screen It seems odd that somg of the big films this year are adaptations of great works of literature. You would wonder how in the world the directors , would have convinced the money hungry studio heads to take this risk Turn to page 17 Natural Source Herbal Remedies VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS Bulk & Delicatessen a§ WATER ST., PORT PERRY oy Discount on 985-3007 a TEA WITH LUNCH nches
