wp 28-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , Novemb 3, 1992 -- Grier calls for GTA co-operation The future growth in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) over the next 30 years was the topic discussed at a workshop held at the Thunderbird Golf & Country Club last Thursday. The GTA is defined as the area comprised of Metropolitan Toronto and the surrounding Regional Municipalities of Durham, Halton, Peel and Our Future is a document launched to tackle the areas of 'partner'. Roger Anderson, an Ajax Counsellor, stated he a healthy envir we can all live in, regain and maintain a strong and growing economy which will create employment and foster growth for the six million people expected to be living in Durham Region in the year 2021. Grier told the audience . rep ing the icioalities York. This vast area a total of 30 municipalities and includes many different types of natural environment. Ruth Grier, the minister responsible for the GTA told the invited Durham Region Staff and counsellors that the shaping of growth in the GTA will be as a result of a co- operative effort between the Province and the municipalities. If the Province and municipalities are to run things harmoniously then both must agree to sing from the same song sheet." Grier also stated the province and each municipality must work as partners, working co- operatively. However there was opposition with her use of the word ERVICE D defi a partnership as being 50/60 split but feels the Province and municipalities would be a 90/10 split, favouring the Province. Anderson argued two areas of concern, one-the government's policy of the legalization of basement apartments, and two-the ban on incineration. Re the latter Anderson stated "you have banned incineration for life; this isn't a partnership agreement. You, the minority, have spoken for the majority." Grier replied "incineration is a burning issue." No community wants an incinerator. You create new pollutants when you burn, you create new toxins. Grier went on to state that in some of the United states and in European Countries where they have incinerated in the past, it is now being banned. She also stated the task but she believes the process used in the selection of such a site is a fair, open one. The landfill site picked will keep Durham's waste within its boundaries for the next twenty years. Grier acknowledged the concerns of Anderson and others saying "municipalities are nervous because they don't know for sure what the province is doing.
