wT Bcugog Ciflzen -- Tuesday, November 10, 1008 a CITIZEN SPORTS With victories over Eagles and Chiefs, before loss to Merchants MoJacks run The Port Perry MoJacks ran their winning streak to four games as they dumped the league leading Bowmanville Eagles 6-2 on home ice, then nipped the Lakefield Chiefs 4-3 on the road Friday night. But that streak was snapped Sunday at the Scugog Arena as the Little Britain Merchants went home with a 4-1 victory, their third this season over the green and white This was a bruising hockey game from start to finish with some ferocious hitting by both clubs. The Merchants were coming off back-to-back wins over Lakefield 6-4 and Bobcaygeon 6-2. The spotted the MoJacks a 1-0 lead in the first as Greg Davidson beat Brad Proulx on the power play with a good shot to the corner Shannon Todd drew the assist. Two minutes later, Jeff Budden evened the game as he walked in from the blue line and went upstairs against lan Cooper. Merchants hit for two quick goals early in the second by Jeff Adams and Trevor Trent to make it 3-1 and that's the way it stayed until late in the game when Budden got his second of the night into an empty net. This was a fine hockey game with all the heavy hitting, a couple of scraps and outstanding goalkeeping by Proulx and Cooper. Brad Mizener of the MoJacks squared off with Kyle Higham in a helmets off, bare-knuckles punch-up and both combatants got in their share of shots before the officials hustled them to the showers On Fnday night in Lakefield, MoJacks were short-staffed (just 14 skaters) but never stopped hustling as they nipped the Chiefs 4-3. Jim Vernon and Shannon Todd staked the team to a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, but the Chiefs scored twice in the middle stanza to go up 3-2. Jan Heyes got the equalizer in the first minute of the third with help from Vernon and Todd, and Brent Gaylor got the winner at the 5:46 mark, un- assisted. This game had just three minor penalties to each club and fighting majors to Terry Wellman and Gavin Cochrane. MOJACKS 6-EAGLES 2 MoJack skipper Brad Ryder said last week that the players were looking forward to this Port Auctioneers lose 4-1 to Whitby squad Last Friday night Pearce Auctioneers Novice Team were hosts to a strong Whitby Team. Trevor Weisflock opened the scoring with a bullet shot unassisted. Along with Trevor, Michael Milligan and Jeff Tarbotton played a strong first period. Whitby came back strong with two goals to end the first period. Both our goalies Darcy Stephens and Thomas Lee played a strong game. Dean VanCamp opened the 3rd period with another goal for us with a smooth passing from Trevor Lance and Matt Skerratt. Whitby ended the game with 2 more goals for a final score of 4 - 2. The team was up early Saturday morning for the first tournament in Huntsville. There was a total of 12 teams attending. Our boys played Haliburton in the first game Opening the scoring was Adam Moynes who surprised the opposing goalie. Assisting on the goal were Michael Wiseman and Jeff Tarbotton. Our defense Dane Gray and Tim Jones played a good defensive game. Haliburton pressed hard the rest of the game with one goal in the second period and three in the third to end the game 4-1. The next game was against Huntsville. This was a very tight game with a scoreless first period. Huntsville's goalie didn't have a chance with a blistering shot from Dean VanCamp to open the scoring with an unassisted goal. Seconds later Huntsville got on the board to tie it up one all. Great defense was played by Gerrard Timmers and Scott Duncan With just two minutes left in the game Michael Lefort drilled one by Huntsville's goalie. Assisting was Dean VanCamp in what turned out to be the winning goal with a 2-1 victory for Port Perry. A real action packed game. The next game saw Port Perry up against a smooth skating Collingwood team With a win Port Perry would have stayed for the consolation game but Collingwood was headed for the "A" Championship and out played our team with a 6-0 win. Everyone enjoyed a weekend away. Our next game hosts Port Hope Friday night. win streak to four ph had Goalle lan Cooper turned In a strong game last Thursday night as the MoJacks knocked off league leading Bowmanville 6-2. MoJacks made It two straight Friday night In Lakefield but could not get by the Little Britain Merchants on Supday night. See story for detalls one and he was right on the money as the team turned in a first-rate handing the first-place Eagles their first defeat of the season After spotting the visitors first period leads of 1-0 and 2- 1, the MoJacks slowly began to take charge of the contest and finally got the equalizer late in the second with the teams five- aside. Todd Byers worked behind the Eagle cage to get the puck out front to Jim Vernon and he weht "upstairs" to beat former MoJack Drew Campbell. And it was Vernon with his 10th of the season at 6:25 of the second who fired what proved to be the winner, cruising in from the left side with a wrist shot from a fairly sharp angle. Todd Dennis and Shannon Todd got the assists. Clair Cornish finally beat Campbell at the mid-point with a low shot to the stick side from the face-off circle. Twice before Cornish had fired the puck from the same spot only to have Campbell make the save with the pads. This time, he went low and the score was 4-2. MoJacks put the game completely out of reach with two short-handed markers in the span of 30 seconds. MoJacks had worked hard killing off a two-man dis- advantage and were still a man short when Vernon snared an errant pass deep in the Eagle zone and had an open net fer his third of the contest. And just 30 seconds later at 14:35 Jeff Barr was set up by Todd Dennis (his third assist) and beat Campbell through the performance 1n pads with what looked like a fairly routine shot. It was Barr's second of the game as he scored the first goal for the MoJacks in the opening frame For the Eagles, Gary Adams and Todd Canning got the goals This was a highly entertaining Junior C hockey game for 656 minutes until the MoJacks broke things open for the 6-2 lead. The pace was quick, there were plenty of scoring chances at both ends no shortage of hitting. Drew Campbell really held the Eagles in the game in the second period when MoJacks enjoyed a margin in play. And in the MoJack cage, lan Cooper had his best outing so far this season. He was rock solid after giving up the two goals in the first. This victory over his former team should go a long way in giving his confidence a boost. The game marked the return to the MoJacks of defenseman Gavin Cochrane. The 17-year old Port Perry native who was drafted last summer by Niagara Falls Thunder, started this season with the Oshawa Legionaires, but opted to return home and join the MoJacks so he can give his school work more time and attention. Last season, he was top rookie for the MoJacks and was named one of the three stars in the Central Jr. C. All Star game. SLAPSHOTS: Head coach Brad Ryder continues to be pleased with the effort he is getting from the MoJacks. "They are working hard and they are working together," he said after the loss to the Merchants On the game with Merchants, he disappointed with the outcome, but pleased with the fact the team was getting its sconng chances. "We just couldn't seem to capitalize around the (Merchant) net." And he noted that Merchant goalie Brad Proulx came up with some fine stops as he faced 40 shots. Ryder said the victory Friday over Lakefield was a good one for the club. "Hard work and hustle won the game for us," he said. After a very slow start, MoJacks have run their record to six wins, six losses and one tie for 13 points. Clair Cornish missed the weekend games with a charley horse. In his six games since Joining the team, Cornish has fired 19 points. He and Vernon are tied for the team lead. Netminder Ian Cooper appears to be back in form after a slow start to the season. He is looking like the guy who played so well for the squad last season. The win over Bowmanville will go a long way in shoring up his confidence. MoJacks are on the road this weekend for a game Friday night in Bobcaygeon and this Sunday they are in Bowmanville to tackle the first place Eagles. Game time is 7:30 PM. Next home game at the Scugog Arena is Thursday, Nov. 19 when the Chiefs are in town for an 8:30 faceoff. the was
