GM sales increase for month of October General Motors of Canada reports a sharp increase in vehicle sales last month, compared with October 1991. GM dealers in Canada sold 31,169 new vehicles in October, that's a 23.1 per cent increase over the same month a year ago. - Passenger car sales were up 17 per cent (19,966 units) and truck sales soared 36 per cent to 11,203 units. In a statement released last week, GM attributes the improved sales figures to the continued strong demand for Pontiac Sunbird and Chev Cavalier. The combined sales in October of these two models was up 44 per cent from a year ago. And Geo Metro also experienced a signficant hike as deliveries more than doubled from 6573 to 1,681. Other strong performers for the company were the re- designed compacts Pontiac Grand Am, Olds Achieva and Buick Skylark. Greater availability pushed sales from 360 a year ago to 1766 in October. The truck market strength was also broad-based, according to the company statement, as sales of Chev Lumina APV, Pontiac Trans Sport and GMC Safari compact vans jumped 56 per cent. The Oshawa-built full size Chev and GMC C/K series extended cab pick-ups also enjoyed strong sales, up 21 per cent to 4,682 units. Likewise the Chev Blazer/GMC Jimmy which posted combined sales increase of"29 per cent in October over the same month in 1991. The strong showing in sales in the month of October is welcome news for the auto maker which 'had been experiencing slower sales in 1992. From January 1 to October 31 this year, GM total car sales stood at 226,809, off 9.9 per cent from the 261,709 cars sold in the same nine months last year. Truck sales this year are at 114,622, down 4.8 per cent from the 120,382 units sold from January to October 31 last year.
