wp 20-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Nc b 17,1992 _& CITIZEN SPORTS After demolishing the Bullets 9-2 on Friday evening MoJacks grind a win over Eagles It won't go into the books as a "classic," but the Port Perry MoJacks will gladly take two hard-earned points after clipping the wings of the Bowmanville Eagles 4-2 Sunday night in Bowmanville. Coupled with a 9-2 thumping of the still winless Bobcaygeon Bullets on the road Friday, the MoJacks inched their way over .500 and now sport a record of eight wins, six losses and one draw after 15 games in the Tracy Churchill of Blackstock and her thoroughbred mare "Pizzazz" have completed another successful year. They arc reserve champion in the Trillium Adult Amateur Hunter Division for the 1992 season. Blackstock Curling The Mens Curling League is underway for another season at the Blackstock Club. And as always the competition is keen for the Mens Trophy, donated by Merlin Suggitt. 4 And speaking of Merlin, he has his rink off to a quick start with two wins In games November 9, Merlin trailed the Gerald Kelly nnk 7- 3 after five ends, but came storming back to grab four in the sixth. Merlin wasn't finished yet in this one as he really gave himself a cushion by stealing a four ender in the seventh and another deuce in the final end for the 11-7 victory. On sheet two, Richard Van Camp made up for a defeat the previous week. He bounced Cam Porter's rink 10-2 and almost get back the six-ender he suffered last week. Richard had five rocks in play and needed just a gentle tap to give him six, but opposing skip Porter would have none of that. He cut him out of four counters to leave Richard with two in the end. In the first games of the new season played November 2, Gerald Kelly edged Porter 5-4. The teams were tied coming home but Gerald managed to slip one through for the victory, even though Cam took four ends to three with one blanked. In the second game of the evening, Dale Van Camp scored a six ender and went on to defeat Richard Van Camp 13-3. Dale was throwing the skip rock in the absence of Merlin Suggitt who was away on a deer hunting trip Although the ice was bit "slow" the first night, it has been expeptional after that and the curlers doff their hats to Bob Strong and Vern Sutton for providing an excellent surface. They have certainly made the best of the improvements that were done this summer. There are still a few vacancies left in the Mens League and new curlers are more than welcome to come out Monday nights at 7:00 PM at the Blackstock Arena Students are welcome and play at a reduced rate. The cost for curling is $75 for adults and $60 for students, for the season. Anyone interested, can call Fred Ford at 986-0352 Standings after the first two weeks of play are as follows Merlin Suggitt-two wins, nine points; R. Van Camp, 1 win, six points; Gerald Kelly, 1 win, five points; Cam Porter, no wins, three points. Central Junior C Hockey League. They have won six of their last seven outings. In the Eagles Nest Sunday evening, MoJacks got a fine performance from netminder Ian Cooper who faced 34 chunks of rubber tossed his way and Shannon Todd had an outstanding two-way game as he popped a pair and added an assist. This was a tight checking, ragged kind of a game in which the teams took turns controlling the puck, but could manage few good scoring chances. Jim Vernon staked MoJacks to a 1-0 lead at 5:18 of the first, taking a pass from Todd and beating Drew Campbell with a low backhand from the slot Eagle captain Nick Dennis tied things at 14:11 with a short-hand marker as he scooted 1n from the right side on a two-on-one break and elected to fire away rather than pass MoJacks went up 2-1 just past the mid-point in the middle period as Shannon Todd was set up by Jeff Parry and Gav Cochrane and he beat Cooper with a low back-hand shot, almost a carbon copy of Vernon's goal in the first period With just 11 seconds left in the period and the MoJacks on a power play, Jarrett Harman put them up 3-1 as he was set up in the slot by Jody Logan and Cochrane. He was able to tee it up and whistled a bullet to the top corner on Campbell's glove side. MoJacks ran into some penalty troubles in the third as Cochrane was nailed for a five minute fighting major that left them short for that time. They did a gallant job killing off the major but Dennis got his second of the game at 9:13 to make it 3-2 MoJacks were short-staffed for this game with several regulars out of the line-up and the by the last few minutes of the third, the team appeared to by running out of gas Eagles yanked Campbell with a minute left, but Shannon Todd showed his defensive abilities by intercepting a pass Just inside the Bowmanville blue line and then firing the insurance marker into the open cage Give the MoJacks full marks for sticking with the Eagles in a tough, grinding type of hockey game Logan, Parry, Mizener and captain Brett Puckrin all turned in solid efforts with Parry tailing Eagle sharp shooter Nick Dennis in the final minutes of the match and was able to entice him into a penalty Up in Bobcaygeon Friday evening, MoJacks had no trouble with the winless Bullets as Jim Vernon paced them to a 9-2 victory with two goals and three assists. Jeff Parry and Jody Logan both netted a pair with singles to Shannon Todd, Brent Gaylor and Todd Dennis. Logan had a pair of assists to go with his two goals for a four-point evening. Tim Wild got the nod for the goal-tending chores and faced 22 shots. MoJacks drilled 46 pucks on the Bullet net SLAPSHOTS: In other Jr. C games over the weekend, Lakefield defeated the Bullets 9-4 and then Uxbridge trimmed Lakefield 5-4 in overtime. MoJacks were missing Steve Laird (second game of a two game suspension) Jason Cochrane (back) and Clair Cormish (leg injury) for Sunday's game in Bowmanwlle Shannon Todd and Jim Vernon are tied for the lead in scoring with 25 points (see Sports Stats) in this edition of the Citizen This Thursday evening, the team will host Lakefield Chiefs at the Scugog Arena for an 8:30 faceoff. And they travel to Uxbndge on Friday for an 8:30 start. MoJacks are scrambling with the Chiefs and Bruins in the standings, so these are two important games. There 18 no game scheduled for this coming Sunday night at the Arena. Port Perry High School Midgets won the LOSSA Volleyball Championship last week going undefeated In a round robin tournament. Members of the team from left: Rob Murphy, Eddie Maunder, Dan Munro, Steve Davidchuk, Kevin Hobbs, Paul Fitchett, Luke Martin and coach Debble Stevenson. Not present Mike Smith, Eric Lucyk, and assistant coach Tabatha May. Winning streak still alive On Sunday Nov. 15 at the Ajax Community Centre the Pineridge Tweens put their winning streak on the line. Alechia Cracknell was playing her first game in goal and looked a little uneasy before the game. Every girl on the team put forth their beat efforts to minimize play in our end. The rookie line of Jen Elliot, Pam Hiltz and Laura Domih were flying as they account for four of our seven goals. Two of our own defencemen Jen Pashley and Leanne Wakeford also showed their versatility as they found the net. Diane Vanderliegh playing in only her first game out of the net scored a beauty in the second period. Cindy Versheuuren, Amanda Wakeford and Genie Taylor continued to shake the Ajax forwards with their checking. Team work at both ends of the reins has allowed us to continue winning. The team missed Jill Tapham and Emma Russell out of the lineup due to illness. Hurry back girls we need you Our next game is Sun. November 22 at 3:30 at Don Beare Arena in Pickering Good luck girls!
