ugog = y » {VO a Obituary- -Sam Cawker: educator, sportsman, gardener It was with shocked Wisbelief followed by a sense of grief and great personal loss... when Samuel A. Cawker passed away very suddenly. He had been ill for five weeks but seemingly had recovered... when he passed away at his farm home at Scugog Point Road on November 2 in his 88th year. Sam was born in Reach Township, October 18th, 1905, the third son of John Cawker and Leona Boynton. Growing up on the family farm north of Port Perry (now Castle Harbour Estates) he attended the former Yellow School and Port Perry High School... and then on to Toronto Normal School graduating with a First Class Certificate. After teaching at Caesarea School 8.8. No. 7 for two years he went to Toronto where he learned the _Hardware business. Latef while in Toronto he taught school at Scarborough for*a few years, also at Mimico - the School for delinquent boys, and then decided to try Continuation School in Millbrook. He taught up to Grade 12 - Latin, French and .Art, and was a critic teacher for Peterborough Normal School. Now that he had a fair salary Sam Cawker and Mabel Armstrong decided it was time to get married and settle down so they were married in Blackstock and moved to Millbrook, had a lovely little bungalow and were happy. Before the year was over they were parents of twin boys Arthur and Alan, a bonny pair of kids. After teaching for four years, Sam had a yen for his home town so came back to Port Perry and taught as Vice Principal at the R.H. Cornish School for 34 years (one year was spent in war work). Two more sons were born to them in Port Perry, Grant and Ralph. Sam retired from teaching in 1968, and became an enthused farmer in Cartwright where he has resided ever since, happy and contented with the outdoors and the quiet solace the country offered. He was a life member of Fidelity Lodge No 428 in Port Perry and a life member of Blue Ray Chapter, No 238, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Patron for four years. He was a member of Port Perry United Church, and when he moved to. Nestleton he transferred to Nestleton United Church. He was also member of Port Perry Historical Society. Being talented in creating with his hands he excelled in Art, was an avid reader of good books especially history. His bountiful garden was a source of pleasure to him. He enjoyed fishing and was a keen lover of sports. Sam had a ready smile, a good sense of humour, a cheerful disposition and his upright character and honesty, plus his warm personality has won for him a host of friend. He enjoyed children and missed them when he retired. He was highly honored in 1990 by having a school named after him. The S.A. Cawker, Public School was officially opened on Thursday, May 10th, 7:30 p.m.. 1990. Sam was deeply moved and felt humble by the great honour and recognition for his over 40 dedicated years of service in the teaching profession. These words seem to fit Sam as he lived: Faithful in every trust, honest in every deed, rightgpus and just, this is the whole of Sam's Creed. Along with his loving wife Mabel, he leaves to mourn, son Arthur Edward Cawker and wife Carroll and family of Sudbury, John Alan Cawker and wife Eleanor and family of Oshawa, Grant Armstrong Cawker and wife Merna and family of Oshawa, (predeceased by son Ralph Forsyth Cawker of Toronto), daughter-in-law, Sylvia Cawker and family of Scarborough, and friend Diape Riccio and son Jacob of Scarborough, sister Grace Leona Hastings and family of Port Perry, and brother Robert Boynton Cawker and wife Madeline and family. Brothers Gordon, Charles and Jim predeceased him. Services were held at the Wagg Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 4, 1992 with Rev. Dale Davis officiating. Cremation followed.
