He couldn't lift the toe and foot off the ground, and at first, his doctors thought it was a pinched nerve in his spine That was in the spring of 1989. Further tests revealed it was not a pinched nerve, but Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Al S Gehrig's Disease" Like most people, Mr. Martyn didn't know very much about ALS, but the life-long resident of Scugog certainly knows all about the disease now It has become steadily worse over the past year to the point where he is now viritually unable to walk. And he certainly can't do the carpentry work that kept him busy for more than 20 years These days, he passes much of his time at home painting by better known as "Lou numbers "It's a great way for me to pass the time," he told the Citizen in an interview at his home last week He has completed dozens of these paint-by-numbers scenes, has given many away to family and friends, but had reached the point where he wasn't He's proud of the paintings he has completed. "They are not the kind you might hang in your living room, but they would make a nice Christmas gift for a youngster or to put in the rec room," he says And any funds raised for the ALS Society would certainly help. There is no cure and = treatment, and medical science remains baffled as to the cause of *Lou Gehrig's Disease * Mr. Martyn has no pain and his mind is as sharp as always But he has virtually lost the use of his legs and he knows the disease will eventually spread to his arms "It's like having an electric wire in the body cut off. You just can't get any power," he explained He says most days he doesn't feel like leaving the house. "I'd just as soon sit here and look out the window."
