££ L = wr 38 Soug 8 Citizen -- Tu p ¥ 24, 1992 dn The Royal brings country to the city by Heather McCrae "Once a year the country 'comes to the city." This years slogan for the 64th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is an appropriate one. "The Royal," as it is commonly referred to has been the largest indoor agricultural fair = and equestrian competition in the world for more than 60 years. Shelley Holliday and Barry Van Camp, both Blackstock residents, have been working at The Royal in the Registrations Department since mid-September. Over the past years Shelley has shown at the Fair. She's shown her family's Guernseys and in 1988 she won the Ladies Lead and Wool Competition. Consequently, working "behind the scenes" this year was rather special for her due to her previous involvements. Shelley was the Dairy Clerk at The Royal, in charge 'of mailing out entry forms and to all the exhibitors from the previous year in the Dairy Division. During the twelve days at The Royal, there were over 1400 entries in the Dairy category, competitors showing Holsteins, Guernseys, Ayrshires, Jerseys, Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorns. Bob Powell, a Scugog Ayrshire breeder and milk producer was this years Chairman of the Dairy Division. The Royal has also gone through a re-structuring phase this year under the leadership of a new Agricultural Administrative Committee, spearheaded by Donald Rickard, a local cash crop beef farmer. This appointment has'enabled the diary cattle Committee to have a more input with the operations of The Royal and produce a more 'people oriented' program for everyone. catal This was Barrys third year at The Royal, being in charge 'of the entries in the Sheep, Swine and Dairy Goats Division. Barry, like Shelley, has shown in previous years also. Fifteen years ago the Van Camp family began showing their Polled Dorsets at the fair and in more recent years have shown Guernseys and Brown Swiss cattle. : : Every entry for the fair is entered into a computer. Catalogues are printed, and we're talking thousands of them, then mailed out to the entrants from the preceding year. This year, in the Sheep Division, there were 300 market sheep registered and over 500 breeding stock. Two hundred and twenty five dairy and angora goats were recorded and over 300 swine were catalogued.
