Bougog Citizen -- Tuesday, Decemb LTR T 4 Taking top honours at the Royal by Heather McCrae "I knew I was up against the top ponies in the Welsh circuit, but I'd do my best, but never, ever dreamed. of winning it all." Those are the words of Shirley Cane of Hoskin Stables in Blackstock. If anyone were to ask Shirley how she fared at The Royal, you'd be darned 'sure, by the twinkle in her eye and that look on her face, it'd be good news. And then she'd say, in that modest way of hers, "pretty good." Pretty good indeed. On Friday, November 20, with Shirley's daughter showing Kenview Kally-Ko in the lead classes, a red ribbon was won in the Yeld Mare Class, Champion Mare and Grand Champion Mare. Shirley says "the credit goes to my daughter, Patti. You have to show the pony on lead in. walk and trot paces. Kally and Patti do so well together, ially in the trot cl But to top off Friday's show Kally won The Welsh Pony and Cob Society trophy. The Welsh Supreme - the highest honour in the Welsh circuit and Kally claimed it. This " dous trophy coed in 1959 from or eewrth, Wales, Another pony, an 8 year old stallion, Snow Pony Blondus, won first in_his stallion class and also won the reserved Grand Champion Stallion. Blondus had been purchased by Shirley just this past , summer and had only been shown once in his lifetime by his previous owners. "He's a great liftle guy," said Shirley in a recent interview, "easy to work with." Must be to compete against the top Welsh stallions and come away with another red ribbon. With Shirley driving Kally in the driving classes on Saturday, she won the Best Welsh Pony under 50"; Welsh Pony, Ladies To Drive and her son won the Welsh Pony, Gentleman to Drive. And Shirley says "they were all large classes and the top ponies in the circuit." Another pony Cnapaton, affectionately known as Alice, placed fourth twice with Patti driving in two classes. ) Winning isn't easy: It takes dedication, hard work and a lot of training to produce a champion. Shirley also states "it's highly unlikely you'll get a champion pony in the lead class and the driving classes," but Kally proved she can do both. When anyone comes home with eight trophies and one blanket from The Royal, then you know you must be doing something right. . But Shirley says she couldn't be so involved with the ponies without the support of her husband, Terry, Patti and Phil and Patti's fiance, Bob and many friends. Harvey Heathcote, a friend and fellow competitor in the Welsh circuit, but didn't show at the Royal, trailered Shirley, : Patti and the two ponies into the fair, leaving Bl k at Jennifer Heathcote, 15, won the '10 years and ove? Welsh Showmanship' at this year's - Royal, showing a friends pony. This was a real honour for Jenn as it was her first time showing at the Royal. So, how long has Shirley been interested in ponies? "Well", she says, "I had my first little pony when I was five years old" and she's been around horses ever since:It was just six years ago when" she bought two Welsh ponies to be used in her school lessons. . Just for fun she showed these ponies the next year at local fairs and won some ribbons with both. " Then she was hooked, so to speak, and has continued to show some top quality ponies since. Ardmore Autobon, known jas Toby, has been classed as The Most Versatile Pony in Ontario for three consecutive Years now. Shirley's shown at fairs all . through the summer, on the Welsh circuit, competing at Schomberg, Aurora, Syracuse, NY, Markham, Sutton, the CNE, Caledon, Brampton, Lindsay, Erin and now The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
