Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 19, 1993-- 31 _ Upsets tighten standings i in the SHL After a week off for the Ringette Tourney, the SHL returned with a number of upsets to tighten the standing with the playoffs in the near future. Game 1 saw the Cofnpton Comets "tee off" on the Harrison Blazers with a decisive 10-4 victory. Five point games were credited to Bruce Smith, Dave Dickson and Mark Jobb. Oxley and Ron Compton each notched a pair of goals with singles to Duncan, Hope, Asselstine and Dave Roth. Adding assists were Roth with 2 and one each to Hope Duncan, Hancock and Asselstine. Replying for the Blazers were Davison with 2 goals and singles to Edwards and Lance. Assists went to Edwards, Templeman, Davis and Paul Van Camp. With this win the Comets move even closer to the league leaders. Game 2 proved to be an awesome upset as the Fitzgerald Clippers handed first place Pineridge Phantoms a 6-0 posting. Ken Harman in his usual steady role in the Clipper net was well deserving of the shutout. The offense was led by Marvin Stevenson and Lee Wilbur with 2 goals each and singles to Hurst and Reid. For once the Clippers had a full team effort in front of Harmon to secure the 2 points. Game 3 also proved to be somewhat of an upset as the Taylor Aces nipped second place Crandell's Gamblers 3-2. The Gamblers took an early lead with goals by Churchill from Jeffrey and Flower, and then Evane from Samis and Donovan Smith. However, the Aces found their legs to score 3 unanswered goals and take the win. Goal scores were Robertson, Warner and the "winner" by Ken Little. Assisting the come-back were Robertson, Wagar, Dwayne Bronson and Regional Reg" Mcintyre. Those Aces have picked up a reputation for being a "physical crew" but have proved that they can also win games as shown in the last few weeks Game 4 saw the J&D Carpentry Hawks double the Van World Sharks 4-2. The Hawks appear to be back on track after a mid-season slump. Dowie lit up the board twice with singles to Olsen and Curran. Adding assists were Van Camp and Driscoll with 2 each and singles to Curran and McQuade. Bill Van Camp may have been holding secret practices on his outdoor rink to get these Hawks turned around! Megan Marlowe was the first to put Port on the scoreboard, with Jen Smith and Amy Parliament assisting Tanya Towns slipped in Port's second goal after picking up a pass from Karen Kett. Megan Marlowe and Jen Smith assisted Port's third marker, fired in by Val Payne During the second period Port Perry took control, even as they continued to skate off numerous penalties. on Megan Marlowe, once again, opened the scoring in the period Jen Smith assisted Goal 6 flew in off the stick of Amy Parliament as she was on the receiving end of a passing play by Karen Kett and Val Payne. Leea Kinnunen scored goal six as she neatly popped the ring, unassisted, into the net. Val Payne was responsible for goals 7 and 8. Jen Smith, Karen Kett and Kim Poppleton assisted. Port's final goal came at the 10 second mark. Jen Smith picked up a pass from Kim Poppleton and promptly barrelled in to round out Port's total with goal number 9 Port Perry won by a 9-5 score On Sunday the girls enjoyed another successful game against the Markham Debs Durning the first period, Port went on a scoring spree to total ten goals. Karen Kett and Amy Parliament led the way with 3 goals each Tanya Towns racked up 2 points with singles going to Megan Marlowe and Jennifer Smith. Karen and Amy were also awarded 3 assists each with Tanya earning two Additional assists went to Jen Smith, Michelle Fitzpatrick, Melanie Leea Kinnunen and Kim Poppleton In the second period, Port added two more goals to their total. Kim Poppleton snapped in number eleven and Tanya Towns brought her goal total to three when she slipped number 12. Earning assists on the plays were Jen Smith, Val Payne, Demmer, Karen Kett and Amy Parliament. When Port last faced Markham they fought a losing battle.
