Mutual funds release performance statistics with the winners rewarded broad print publicity and free advertising. Adding to the confusion, managers of the best performing funds are asked for their favourite picks for the coming year. The investing public is led to believe each RRSP season that a handful of so-called "gurus" have un- locked the secrets of the financial markets. A trend has developed over the last few years advising stock purchases to be the mainstay of RRSP i I am ad. ly opposed to this idea. In fact, I will go so far as to say that most of us should not have any stock in our RRSPs. Historical studies will prove that a variety of interest bearing Bonds and GICs are superior performers over the long term than funds placed in Equities. Proponents of stock market investments point to the sparkling return of the stock market during the 1980's. And they would be right. During this unusual period, stocks have performed at a rate of 16 per cent. But taken over a longe period, the time required for retirement savings, the returns are a lot less glamourous. The 30-year gain stands slightly above nine per cent. Stocks require constant review and market timing. Few managers are credited with out performing randomly moving stock market indexes over the long haul. The sheer numbers of funds to choose from could make it as difficult to select the best performing mutual as it is to pick and individual stock winner. Further, past performance is no guarantee of future wealth. The glitter of spectacular one-year profits should not cloud the fact that stock values always cyclical. They could very well be depressed in value when the time comes to cash in for your retirement. The gains on stock market investments are given perferential treatment as capital gains when held personally rather than inside an RRSP. Compounding interest year in and year out takes all the guess-work out of where to put your funds. Interest rates are set each year and you can predict with assurance how your RRSP will perform. You can easily establish a sum that will be required for your retirement and set about budgeting with complete confidence. A variety of short and long term maturities will ensure the best possible average yields. When interest rates are high, lock them in for longer periods. The best part, though is compounding interest on your interest. The growth of your RRSP funds keeps on going and going, just like that battery driven rabbit. All social agencies are invited to come and participate in our Geographical Game.."Survival in Hard Times"... come and be part of our Recession Resolution. We will meet in groups, primarily from the townships of Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge, to explore ways and means of helping our clients cope with the hard times of the recession. As usual there will be registration and pre- luncheon mingle from 11:30 - 12:15, followed by lunch, in township groups, and a short business meeting before we get into the "Survival Game".
