Belles romp over Markham In the first game of their league playoffs, the Ivory Forest Belles butted up against the Markham Debs at Clatworthy Arena in Markham. During the first five minutes of the game, Markham popped in two fast goals and it appeared as though Port Perry might have been in for a tough game However, at the 6:57 mark of the first period, Kim Poppleton passed the ring over to Karen Kett who slipped in Port's first goal. Seconds later Val Payne grabbed a pass from Leea Kinnunen and fired in goal number two. From that point on the girls never looked back Port Perry controlled the ice and managed to basically score at will. Throughout the game Port totalled seventeen goals with the last goal being scored by Karen Kett at 0:10 with Port Perry sporting six skaters while Tracy Pelow enjoyed the action from the bench. Megan Marlowe assisted on this final effort Port's scoring was evenly spread throughout the two periods. Tracy Pelow was sharp between the pipes Karen Kett totalled six goals Teach attitudes first, skills second What is the First Commandment of coaching? If you said winning, better read on. Fair Play Is the First Commandment, and is based on this Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. You and the parents of your players are responsible for instilling this Fair Play attitude. Everyone must show respect for rules, referees, teammates and opposing players and coaches. You can start by setting a good example. Don't argue with referees or opposing players and coaches, and teach your players to never check or hit in a manner that might cause injury to an opponent. There's nothing wrong with winning, but overemphasizing it can lead to joy and r participation for players, and result in undesirable behavior and high anxiety levels. Never ridicule or condemn your players for making mistakes or losing games, and don overplay your talented players. All players have a right to fair ice time. Always consider the welfare of your players first, by making certain they are participating in a safe environment. Ensure that facilities, equipment and practices are sale and appropriate to the age and ability level of your players. Downplay tough and ir \, and stress that players should never hit an opponent from behind Teach attitudes first, skills second. Good coaches emphasize having fun, developing positive values, pi Pp and satis 1, and improving health and fitness. "Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 2, 1993-- 23 4a Lions find it tough at Atom tourney The competition was very tough and the Port Lions were eliminated after two losses, 5-1 by Bowmanville and 8-0 by Orono The first game was close as Lipns goalie Mike Wadsworth stopped 25 shots and kept the Lions to within 1 goal until the third period. Bowmanville pened a 2 goal margin early in the first period but the Lions persisted Late in the second period with only seconds remaining Ian Garnett and Ryan Haslem broke away 2 on 2. Garnett fed Haslem a perfect rink wide pass and Ryan brake in alone on the left wing and beat the Bowmanville goalie Unfortunately Bowmanville scored three unanswered goals in the third period to earn the victory The second game was "just one of those games". A strong Orono team dominated the play and goalie Mike Wadsworth was very busy facing 36 shots Although the was lopsided we all gave credit to the Lions team. They kept trying their best and never shied away from this tough team Congratulations to all of these team players who gave a great effort: Mike Wadsworth puck stopper extraordinaire score Ashleigh Murphy (tenacious checker), Daniel Minion (great deking!' Jeremy Hall perseverance), Darren Royal skate, skate, skate), Matthew Cracknell (never gave up), Tom McArthur (always on the puck), lan Garnett (first on the puck), Ryan Haslem (sharpshooter), Ken Ellis (go go-go), Ian Bonsar (determined), Jason Howarth always trying), Brent Simpson (kept on skating), Bran Harms (check-check-check), Ryan Kehoe (let's win it!)
