'Malmont Atoms Port Perry's Malmont Farm Atom 'A's have begun their playoff's against Collingwood and after two games this past weekend it's obvious that it's going to be a long series. Collingwood came to town Friday night and before our boys _even caught their wind they were down 2-0. Giving the i a CITIZEN SPORT SHORTS 1 after one. The second period was a lot more of the same as Collingwood added two more to - make it 4-1 after two. This gave our boys something to think about while the ice got a flood and when they came out for the third there was a whole lot more effort couple of goals advantage is nothing new to these guys though, nothing that four in a row can't cure. Ryan McQuade started the comeback midway through the first with the helper to Brett Clouthier. In a strong second period for Port, Brad Johnston got things rolling with assists to Brad and Ryan. Ryan then got in a race for the puck with Collingwood's goalie who was probably wishing he was still back in the cage when Ryan swooped around him and scored the third goal. Brett and Murphy Irving got the assists. Brett then bagged what proved to be the winner, Ryan and Jeff Ashton drawing the assists. Collingwood got one more late in the game to make the final score 43. Quite a good game for both sides with goalie Mike MacClennan making some fine saves late in "the third when Collingwood was pressing. Sunday afternoon was the nest clash between these evenly matched teams and Port knew what was in store for them. Well maybe not! Collingwood came out 'on fire and for the first five minutes there was an awful lot of Beat down in Port's end. The boys had to consider themselves lucky to be down by only a goal at the end of the first period. Brett scored on a nice 'effort with Bsn Assisting to make it 2- taking place. An unassisted goal by Brett and then a deflected shot by Jeff made a hockey #ame out of what was starting to look like a lesson in hustling. With the Score 4-3 Port had some quality scoring chances but couldn't bag the equalizer. Collingwood added another into the empty net at the buzzer to make the final 5-3. The key to this series is going to be for Port to come out flying at the drop of the puck because this Collingwood team can put them in a big hole in a hurry if they don't. Both teams have tournaments this coming weekend so the next game will be played Feb, 26. The Atoms have their home tournament this Saturday Feb. 20. XL Gas Bar Go Silver The Port Perry XL Gas Bar Novice Girls participated in the 13th Annual Guelph Ringette Tournament on the weekend and skated away with the silver medal. The Eaglettes had a very basy Saturday with three games at 8:00, 11:30 and 4:00. The first game saw the XL'ers go up against the entry from Ayr and "the girls came up with a solid effort and a 8-0 win. Jill Pashley, with a great defense in front, had a relatively easy time for her shutout. Game 2 had Port up against the host Guelph team and the result was another 8-0 win with Janna getting the shutout with a solid backstop effort. Scoring for the Eaglettes were Stacey, 2 goals and 2 assists, Léanne, 2 goals, Shannon, 1 goal and 1 assist, Nicole, 1 goal, Katherine, 1 goal, Alaina B, 1 goal, Rhea, 1 assist, Kristen, 1 assist, and Jackie Pashley, playing her best ringette this season, 1 assist. Game 3 was the, best game of the tournament wit Port and Waterloo Gold playing to a 6-6 tie. The Eaglettes were ahead but the girls tired in the second period and gave up the lead. With Waterloo ahead 6-5, Port tied the game with 1 minute left with the nicest goal of the weekend, a 3- way passing play from Sarah to Rhea to a wide open Janna that put her in the clear on a breakaway and she made no mistake and deposited the ring in the right hand corner, Jjll played an outstanding game in goal and kept Port in the game when the girls tired and ran out of steam. Port's other scorers were Stacey (2), Rhea, 1 goal and 1 assist, Katherine, 2 assist, Nicole, 1 goal, Leanne, 1 goal, Sarah, 2 assists, Janna, 1 goal, Shannon, 1 assist, and Kristen, 1 assist. The championship game on Sunday had Port and Waterloo in a rematch. With several of Port's players not feeling the best with a bad bug going around and the whole team not 100% from the 4 games and the swimming and partying at the hotel, the Eaglettes could not get things going and were never really in the game but still put up a valiant effort in a 6-2 loss and the silver medal. Jill played her best game in goal and without her, the score would have been a lot more. Scoring for Port were Stacey and Sarah. The coaches and parents are very proud of the girls play and the way they handled themselves in such a pressure situation. A great weekend and a great learning experience for the whole team. The pizza on Saturday night was delicious and all the girls has a great time. Eagles, Stalled Mistakes at critical times and the inability to finish off good scoring chances cost the Port Perry Precision Construction Eagles Midgets and possibility of ping the Milton Sand Transport Midgets in their game in Milton Saturday night. A 2-2 tie set up the need for another visit to Milton regardless of the outcome of Monday's game. Port dominated the first period as they have in all three games, but had difficulty beating Jeff Currie, who had a strong game in the - Milton," net. Duane Empringhdém, who continues to perform well, was the only Eagle to get one by Currie; lifting his own rebound high into the net on a power play. Milton took advantage of a little sloppy play in the Port end to tie the game later in the period. The goal, along with the return of a team leader from vacation, seemed to inspire Milton to a somewhat better effort through a scoreless second period. Early in the third, the Eagles pulled ahead again. Jeremy Geer ' won a faceoff deep in Milton territory cleanly to Scott Heasman at the left point. Heasman's low bullet was deflected perfectly onto the top shelf by Steve Desautels, who was parked off the post. Geer and Daryl Bourgeois of the Country Style Bantams did double duty on the evening, changing sweaters following their own game to bolster a shortened Eagle bench. Both turned in excellent efforts, with Geer in particular winning faceoffs consistently and making several key defensive plays late in the game. Again, a hesitation in a clearing play set the stage for Milton to notch the equalizer; this one a shorthanded effort. The goal forced an overtime period, and even though Port had several golden opportunities to go ahead, they couldn't get a shot to catch any twine, sending both teams home with a point. Despite Port dominate throughout most of the game, Milton had more chances than in either of the other games and Rick Hutchinson was at his best, having no chance on either goal. There was a short outbreak of extracurricular activities with only four seconds left in overtime that will likely cost the team a bench shortage for Monday night. Productive winger Ryan Ridgeway and defensive stalwart Brad McArthur pounded out unanimous decisions in a couple of spirited bouts. The tie leaves this 8-point series at 6-1 in favour of the Eagles, with game 4 at home on Monday night at 9:10. PeeWee #2 The next round of the playoffs for the' PeeWee #2 team ATTENTION BUSINESSES THE INTERNATIONAL BARTER NETWORK Es commenced on Feb. 6 as the Scugog Overhead Doors took on Lindsay in a best of seven series. In Game One at Lindsay the boys got off to a rough start as the lack of bench strength and sickness took its toll. These guys were no match on this night as Lindsay cruised to an 8-2 win. Scoring for Port were Derek Tindall and Glen McGready with Troy Campbell, Ryan Puckrin and Gavin Baxter picking up assists. In Game Two last Tuesday at the Scugog Arena the story was a different one. With the colds all cleaned up and extra depth on the bench with Wyatt Park and Aaron Levy back from injuries and Adam Brain and Kevin Edwards called up from House League, Port was ready to play. The first period play was exciting and both teams played end-to-end hockey. Lindsay got the early break to take the lead but Port came right back with the tying goal scored by Glen McGready on a nice deflection in front. Assisting on the play were Justin Halligan and Adam Brain. In the second it was all Port as they lit up the scoreboard four times in three minutes. Taking advantage of Lindsay penalties, three goals were: pcored on power play, as Port charged ahead 5-1. The scoring parade was led by Glen McGready with his second, Derek Tindall, Justin Halligan and Jeremy Gibson, Picking up assists on the four goals were Dave Gainey with two, Glen McGready with two and Justin Halligan, Jeremy Gibson and Ashley Vanschelven with one each. Lindsay were not going to roll over and play dead unfortunately, and commenced to chip away at the big lead Port had built up. They got within one before Ashley Vanschelven pounced on a loose puck and deposited it into an empty net for a 6-4 victory for Port. The series continues on Sunday back in Lindsay in another nailbiter. One can only say that "Homer the Referee" did not help the Port cause. In an entertaining game Port jumps out to an early lead as Jeremy Gibson picked up a loose puck in front and pokes it home for a 1-0 lead. Aaron Levy and Ryan Moynes picking up assists on the goal. Port continued to play strong defensive hockey with Troy Campbell, Ryan Moynes, Adam Hobbs, Nick Skerratt and Wyatt Park keeping this Lindsay team at bay. When the armour cracked Shane Savage is there to make those excellent glove saves he has done all year. Lindsay continued to press and managed to take a 2-1 lead early into the third period. Undaunted, Port Came right back as the new scoring sensation Glen McGready tied it up at two. Drawing assists on the goal were Gavin Baxter and Troy Campbell. The third ends with the score tied at two. A ten minute overtime period had to be played in an effort to decide a winner. Not for the faint of heart. As the overtime period is winding down, "Homer the Referee" decides to ruin a good game by calling dumb penalties. He gives Lindsay all kinds of opportunities by giving Port a questionable delay of game penalties. When that didn't help Lindsay, he gave Port the extra penalty in a goalmouth scramble with only 43 seconds to go. What a heartbreak for the boys.
