pd Scugo by Heather McCrae It was fifteen years ago on February 1st that Scugog Community Care was founded. In 1977 an appeal had been launched through church groups and service clubs, from the Co-ordinator of the Durham Region C ity 16, 1 In the yery beginning the office of this new eommunity service was located in a small office in the old arena (since demolished) on Water Street. Elizabeth Fulford was the part-time s rson and with the assistance of some forty | a) A Care Services, to establish a " Service b community care service in Scugog. Diane McKinzey heard what Community Care had to offer and was pleased to hear it provided services to the seniors and to the handicapped. As she puts it in her own words, "I saw what was needed; my own grandparents were aging and I recognized their needs, but ones that were not available to them, so I signed up." It wasn't too long afterwards there was a meeting to elect an ti a reality. Some time later the offices were moved to where H & R Block is now located on Perry. Street. After a few months a transfer of the office was made to where the Township Clerk's office on North Street is presently situated. After one more final move the offices were opened again the first week of January 1987 where the Community Care offices are currently located. Community Care is a non- The Parks and Recreation department is gearing up to assemble it's 2nd Annual Leisure and Activity Guide. The success of the initial guide has provided a focus for community recreation in Scugog. The "guide gives residents an overview of the many recreational opportu- nities available. The Guide is being updated to include all Programs and Activities. Last year, the guide featured information on all P Scugog prepares new Activity Guide events, sporting groups, arena information, and 'special interest groups. The guide also contains registration information for all programs. All community recreation groups aré invited to submit all information on their organiz-ation or event occurring in 1993. Being administered by an elected local committee, it is a member of the Durham Region C : ath Today, Scugog Tommunity Care has approximately 150 volunteers. Mrs, Dorothy Imperial is the administrator of this Home Support Service. Mrs. Fulford is currently the Executive Director of the Durham Region Community Care Services. The volunteers give of their 'time and talents providing services to senior citizens and - those in special need where services are not otherwise available within the community. . Mrs. McKinzey, of Manchester, has been a volunteer with Community Care since its inception. Volunteering in the office for fifteen years, she knows a lot of what community caring is all about." Neighbours serving neighbours" is how she describes it." We're sort of like family to the clients we serve." But Diane admits, "the biggest hurdle at'the onset of the idea of establishing a community care service to Scugog was to get known and be accepted." Community Care still offers the same services it originated with but has expanded to include the delivery of Meals On Wheels, Income Tax Services, adult sitting, a Foot Care Clinic and Luncheon" Date. Many teenagers and young adults offer their services in snow removal. A foot care clinic is held Thursday afternoons. The first Thursday, of the month the clinic is held at the Villa and every er Thursday it is held at tH Latcham Centre. This is a popular service, a place where they. have a "social time, getting caught up on the latest gossip and also being able to chat with the nurse on duty about health concerns in general." Another service that was added to Community Care is COPE, a community mental health program This group helps people deal with the sometimes over- whelming demands of life. The training in the special helping skills is provided for the volunteers to prepare them to help others in this particularly sensitive area. When a client phones in requesting a particular service, the office volunteer can match that request with a volunteer for that particular service. There are almost 400 clients registered with Scugog C ity Care ly. In an interview with the Citizen last week, Diane said "When someone needs a service and I'm able to provide it, then it makes me feel credible to the program. I can see:immediate results. You meet so many special people, and the staff and other volunteers really are wonderful "to work with." Adding,"You definitely get more out of what you give; you get the satisfaction of helping someone. I feel that my life has definitely been made richer by helping with Community Care."
