The Pearce Auction Novice Team travelled to Cobourg on Wednesday hoping to even their Eastern Ontario Semi-Final at one game apiece. Unfortunately the Cobourg squad came out flying and defeated the boys by a score of 4-0. The team was in a deep hole, down 2 games to none in the best of 5 series On Friday night the Auctioneers were on the road to Cobourg once more; this time in a 'do or die' situation. Strong goaltending by Thomas Lee and D'arcy Stephens held off a determined Cobourg team for the first period. With only 27 seconds gone in the second period Dean VanCamp blasted home a rebound for a 1-0 lead; assisted by Matt Skerratt The remainder of the second period saw the Cobourg goalie turn away several good scoring opportunities by the high flying line of Dean VanCamp, Michael Lefort and Matt Skerratt. At 4:27 of the third period the practice of driving to the net paid off again as Matt Skerratt fired a rebound behind the Cobourg goalie; assists went to Dean VanCamp and Michael Lefort. Cobourg kept it interesting when they scored at 6:25 of the third period to move within 1 goal. The slim one goal lead kept those Port Perry fans nervous. With 1 minute and 33 seconds left on the clock, Dean VanCamp broke the tension as he gobbled up a pass from Gerrard Timmers, broke into the clear and whipped a shot behind the Cobourg goalie to send the series back to Port Perry. Defensemen Tim Jones and Scott Duncan continued to stand up defensively as they protected the lead by Cobourg attack. Forwards Adam Moynes and Trevor Lance played heads up hockey as these two smooth play-makers quickly moved the puck to the man in the clear in this 3-1 victory. Saturday night saw the boys back home with the pressure still on in another must win game. Port Perry stormed out of the dressing room, onto the ice, and into a quick 2-0 lead Dean VanCamp and Adam Moynes scored these important early goals; with assists from Matt Skerratt, Michael Lefort, and Michael Milligan. Tenacious checking at both ends of the ice kept the 2-0 lead safe throughout the second period and well into the third. With 2:55 left on the clock Cobourg pulled their goahe and made their charge at the lead. No problem...Michael Wiseman, assisted by Gerrard Timmers, quickly fired a goal into the empty net at the 2:45 minute mark. There was just no stopping the team tonight as only 36 seconds later Dane Gray took a smooth pass from Michael Lefort and let go a blast that was tipped in the n by Dean VanCamp. Th Auctioneers were rolling al Dane Gray, nicely aSsisted by Jeff Tarbotton, scored once more with only 8 seconds left. The aggressive play of defenseman Gerrard Timmers and Dane Gray continued to help the offensive attack. The final score was 5-0. Just 24 hours ago, the team was down two games to none; and now we're headed back to Cobourg as Coach Spencley says "All Even Steven". The Auctioneers greeted Sunday morning with a trip to Cobourg and one more 'do or die' situation. Both teams (and their fans) came out strong in an effort to score that all important first goal. At 8:40 of the first period Port Perry's Trevor Lance banged home a rebound to grab a 1-0 lead; with assists going to Dean VanCamp and Tim Jones. Mid- way through the second period Michael Lefort provided a little breathing room as he charged the net to score in a scramble; assisted by Dean VanCamp and Matt Skerratt, Play (and fan support) was fast and furious for the next 10 minutes Goaltender D'arcy Stephens faced down a breakaway with a great save early in the third period. Play shifted quickly to the other end as Trevor Weisflock's shot found the net on a crisp pass from Scott Duncan. With only 1 minute to go Dean VanCamp, assisted by Dane Gray, slid a shot into the empty Cobourg net to finish the scoring and to finish the series. The hard back-checking by forwards Trevor Weisflock and Jeff Tarbotton was a great help to the defense throughout this 4-0 victory. Michael Milligan and Michael Wiseman worked hard along the boards and moved the puck smartly out of their own end to push Cobourg out over the blue line. The team is to be commended for their effort and especially for that 'never say die' attitude that won the series after being so close to elimination. The coaching staff of Bob Spencley, Murray Empringham, and Ken Parry have found a secret ingredient to get the team pumped up. The players and the parents thank the coaches. Next step the Provincial Championships Overcoming a 6:30 am Sunday game and an injured forward, the 11 member Guardian Drugs team dug down deep to win the Central Ont. Championships This win gives the girls the well-deserved privilege of representing Central Region in the Nepean Provincial Championship Four games, each being a thnller, kept fans and coaches on the edge throughout the tournament. The first match saw the team alone for an early season defeat to Ajax The Guardian Tweens came away with a 5-4 nailbiting victory. Shona Moase using her dipsy-dogdle scored a hat trick while Dana Hooker and Heather Tredway notched singles. Without assists from Laura Hooker, Janna Senyk, Janine Hammond and Bonni- Jo Norton these goals wouldn't be possible. Whitby provided our next challenge and they were prepared as this was their first game of the day and our second. The first period saw Whitby dominate and take a 3- 2 lead, with Heather Tredway, Shona Moase , and Cara Vanderslagt combining for the 2 goals. It looked grim when Whitby grabbed a two-goal lead. In a previous tournament, the Whitby goalie had stopped Shona Moase's penalty shot but coach Dianne Hooker used her positive attitude to convince Shona she could get the ring past the goalie - four times. She netted the winner in overtime on a shorthanded effort with Bonni- Jo Norton initiating the play on a shovel pass to Heather Tredway who quickly sent it up the ice and Shona wrapped it up 6-4. Once again Janine Hammond was used sparingly throughout the tournament due to a severe ankle sprain, but contributed a timely assist. Natasha Burgess aggressively took a penalty during the overtime period to prevent a Whitby goal. Over-confidence came into play at the Oakwood, 6:30 a m Sunday game. A feisty Oshawa team made the most of power plays and an undisciplined Port Perry squad to win this one 4-2. A goal called back with 30 seconds remaining and our goalie on the bench should have tied this one 3-3 "Not'", said the ref. One game was left against our Pickering rivals Smug in the fact that Port's juardian Drug Tweens had played early, they felt that this game was their ticket to the 92-93 Provinaials. Oshawa had played the spoiler in knocking out Whitby before the Guardian game! Thanks Oshawa Realizing that this had become the determining game, winners going to Nepean, missing school and sporting champions jackets, the Guardian Drug Tweens surprised Pitkering with a disciplined 4-2 victory With Shona Moase being constantly shadowed, Heather Tredway provided the scoring punch with 2 goals. Cara Vanderslagt popped in one on the pass of the game from Janna Senyk. This made it 4-2 and took the sting out of the Pickering team. A timely line-change by Brian Shanley earlier in the game set Janine Hammond in on a pass from Cara Vanderslagt the game winner! The perky trio of Laura Hooker, Dana Hooker and Brooke Shanley, were a constant thorn to Pickering and without their hard checking a victory would not have been possible. The defensive threesome of Janna Senyk, Bonni-Jo Norton and Natasha Burgess was outstanding. Solid, spectacular and intense describe the goaltending provided by Katie Senyk. These team ingredients could provide Port's Guardian Drugs Tween "A""s with a provincial championship. You are worthy champions girls. Good Luck Frank R.E. over Emmerson 3-1 Three goals by Kent Jamieson and solid goaltending by Ian Johnson led Frank Real Estate to a 3-1 victory over Emmerson Insurance on Saturday, Feb. 27. Frank scored first, five minutes into the game on a Jamieson breakaway goal. Assists on this goal went to Randy Ralach and Steward Bruce. Emmerson tied the score at 11:07 of the Second on a goal by Chad Mitchell with assists going to Ryan Williams and Frik Hudson. Frank scored the eventual winner, four minutes later on Jamieson's second goal of the game. Randy Pallach assisted on the play The score stayed that way until 9:33 of the Third Period when Kent Jamieson took a Kent Johnson pass and went in to beat Jon Babcock in the Emmerson net, completing his hat 'trick for the day, and putting Frank ahead to stay. Babcock, despite being beaten three times, was outstanding in goal, robbing Frank scorers of sure goals on several occasions. It was a credit to both teams that there were only two penalties in this game
