Snow removal budget remains in good shape The Township budget for winter snow removal remains in good shape this year, according to roads superintendent Ronn MacDonald. Despite several hefty storms this winter, he said "our budget has not been hurt to any signficant extent. So far, it is not much higher than last year." In fact, up to the end of January, the Township had spent $246,000 on snow removal on a total budget of about $470,000. That's $7,000 less than at the same time last year. And though final figures are not in, another $17,000 (approx) was spent in February. He is hoping that the worst of the winter is over and the department won't have to purchase more sand. But his biggest fear right now is not more snow but heavy March rains. "A 40 mm rainfall now would really hurt," he told the Citizen last week. The prospect of flooding, erosion and road wash-outs poses far more danger to the Township's budget than another blizzard or two. As it is, he is concerned that with the amount of frost in the roads there could be some severe pavement break-ups this spring which will mean money spent for rephirs. Stugog Township is responsible for some 390 km of roads. Others fall under the jurisdiction of the provincial highways dept or Durham Region. Clean-ups of snow in the downtown core areas Port Perry (two so far this winter) have cost about $8,000. They (the clean-ups) are necessary to keep traffic (vehicle and pedestrian) moving and to free up parking areas. Scugog this year is using a "Winter Maintenance Quality Standards" document as a "guideline" to snow plowing, - sanding and salting. The document shows "priority" roads that get plowed first and spells out how Township crews tackle a storm when it hits. Mr. MagDonald said the document is to be used as a guideline. "Everything is always subject to change depending on the particular conditions," he stated.
