Publications designed to help farm conservation Farmers looking for the best management practices to implement soil and water conservation measures 'are getting help from a series of innovative publications. Best Management Practices booklets assist farmers to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations, while meeting their own business and production goals. Funded by Agriculture Canada, the Best Management Practices project draws expertise from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and is managed by the wooD SHAVINGS [RIN AY=1NS WOOD SHAVINGS 416-775-5805 Market Report Prices quoted at market closing Monday. Materials produced by the project are intended to support Ontario farmers' commitment to environmental farm planning. Drawn from research and on- farm experience, the booklets take a fresh approach to farm management. They are the result of teamwork involving farmers, farm organizations, government agencies, agribusiness, and academics. Farmers considering change have reacted very positively to the booklets' highly visual and practical format. Field Crops, the fifth publication to date, is being launched at this week's Innovative Farmers Conference in Hamilton. The first part of the 132-page booklet addresses basic concerns, such as the ma t of soil, residues, nutrients, and pests. The second takes a "system approach" to tillage and cropping practices, helping growers consider all the implications of new approaches. Nlustrations, photographs, and case studies bring the material to life. In addition to Field Crops, available booklets include: A First Look, Livestock and Poultry Waste Management, Horticultural Crops, and Farm Forestry and Habitat Management. Publications on water manage- ment, nutrient management, and soils management are slated for '93-94. Best Management Practices booklets are now being made available through local Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food field offices. Some district offices of the Ministry of Natural Resources will also stock them.
